4.5 out of 5 stars.Several years ago, Yale University, which holds the Voynich Manuscript, released hi-res scans of the Voynich Manuscript to the public on the internet. Since then, a number of low quality prints have been available in bookstores. Some were just reprints, some high quality attempts at reproductions, some e-books (people shelling out 99¢ for something they could get for free), and some accompanied by earnest, but sophomoric, attempts at a translation.In 2016, Yale University Press released an edition of the manuscript with life-sized pages, foldouts, and essays. It retails for $50, and is pretty nice.In 2017, Watkins, a publisher of sort-of metaphysical/esoteric titles, has released this edition at about half the cost of the Yale edition. The images are a bit smaller, and a tad more blurred (I think, cheaper-quality paper is to blame), and there are no foldouts (which are expensive to reproduce). There are some nice essays and a "quire map" by Voynich aficianados Rafał T. Prinkle and René Zandbergen.(Note, it is not a straight up facsimile [like an Indy grail diary you can buy online], and the images are reproduced a little less than their actual size, so don't buy it looking for blow-ups of the pages. They have an internet for that.)If you are a Voynich Manuscript fanatic, get this, but get the Yale version first. If you are a Voynich Manuscript novice, get this first and work your way up to the Yale version.

I would almost call the sample page photos a fraud. Actually, I will, for they are. The pictures give the impression that they are photos of this books pages. They are not; they are pictures of the manuscripts pages which are greatly reduced in this book. So much so the the text of the manuscript and the detail of the drawings are completely lost. This book would make an adequate doorstop. As to the authors’ commentary, that is not why I bought the book. I have not read it, nor do I intend to.

I would have given this 5 stars but the copies of the Voynich Manuscript pages were way too small. I have to get a magnifying glass to really see some of the mysterious details. Not coolI'm giving it 4 stars and not 3 because, I now own something that is an image of a great mysteries. I like that.

The plates have big borders that make them too small to study.

Got a Christmas gift and we all sat around passing it around looking at it, reading it, discussing theories. Very interesting!

An amazing read! A good historical context on the creation of the US Public Lands!

One of the first textbooks I ve kept. Well written and easy to read

This book has given me a real appreciation of parks and the journey so many people have gone through to make them a reality today.

This is an excellent book, but be aware that it is a slow read, even though written well. The book details a great deal of policy, government department relations (and infighting such as between the Park and Forest services), public relations, opposition to federal landholding, activists of various kinds (there are a couple of dozen figures, some of them quite memorable, such as John Muir and David Brower, and the evolution of various groups (such as the Wilderness Society and various Sagebrush Rebellion outfits). In other words, a bit more than a century of debate over the public lands. I emphasize that this is all covered well, and clearly, but we're talking about dozens of groups, several conflicting ideas, a number of presidents, policy evolution and political controversy--it's complex and this is not a book one can skim much of, so be prepared for two or three times the usual time it takes for a book of this length.It's also a book that develops the author's view, which is that much of our history, we Americans have seen Nature in terms of using it, and that the more recent concept of inherent worth of nature conflicts with that in a basic way. Much of the public lands are used for economic purposes, particularly BLM lands--grazing cattle, cutting timber, mining, extracting oil and gas, hunting, boating, off the road vehicles, and so on. He sees a sort of grouping, with BLM seeing nature more in utilitarian terms, and the Wilderness system as seeing nature in terms of inherent worth, with other land managers falling somewhere in that range. It's an interesting point, but of course hiking, camping, bird watching and appreciating beauty are all using nature just as much, although with far less physical alteration, than a clear-cutting timber outfit. The issue of grazing on the public lands is explored at some length in several sections; the debate goes back a century and forms a major element in the long-standing Western opposition to many public land policies. Grazing involves a quite large area.The book has some interesting detail. As an environmentalist from college days, I have been little exposed to the ranchers' side of grazing on the public lands, but Wilson examines the arguments of both sides, and in some cases there are clear and substantial benefits to grazing, including why ranchers probably should not be forced to pay market-rate grazing fees. He also discusses the problems of defining what "wilderness" means, rather more complex than usually thought- if it's true wilderness, how can it be managed?The public lands are immense, six hundred million acres--a bit over a million square miles, with that total separated into lands administered by BLM, the Forest Service, the National Parks Service and others agencies (Indian reservations and military bases are not counted in the book). A million square miles is more than Spain, France, Portugal, Germany, Italy and Poland together. The book first describes the public lands, and then chapters look at various categories of the public lands, how they came to exist and how they have been and are currently administered.Chapter 1 is titled "Building the National Commons," and 2 is "Disposing the Domain," discussing how we got all the land and how over time much of it was distributed to private hands, essentially building the nation. Chapter 8 examines the wilderness preservation system--trails, rivers, wilderness areas. All of these feature issues based on private versus public use of the lands.Chapter 9 discusses the overall theme and offers the suggestion that collaborative cooperation offer a tool that can overcome the current environment of political impasse. He defines that as ecosystem management that takes into account that the lands have communities in and around them, and these must be taken into account. It's a surprisingly optimistic ending to a book that often considers raw political power and use principals often at loggerheads. The book has a couple of appendices (tables) that will be of use to some readers.

About the Author

Fred Luthans is the George Holmes Distinguished Professor of Management at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. He received his B.A., M.B.A., and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa where he received the distinguished alumni award in 2002, and did postdoctoral work at Columbia University. While serving as a Captain in the U.S. Army, he taught at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He has been at the University of Nebraska since 1967, his entire academic career, and won the distinguished teaching award in 1986, the excellence in graduate education award in 2000, and in 2008 the highest award in the system for outstanding research. In 2003, he received an honorary doctorate from DePaul University. A prolific writer, he has published a number of major books and about 200 articles in applied and academic journals. His book Organizational Behavior Modification, coauthored with Robert Kreitner, won the American Society of Personnel Administration award for outstanding contribution to human resource management, and another book entitled Real Managers is the result of a four-year research study that observed managers in their natural settings. International Management, coauthored with the late Richard Hodgetts and Jonathon Doh, also published by McGraw-Hill, is in its seventh edition. He also has two recent books, The High Impact Leader (with Bruce Avolio, McGraw-Hill, 2006) and Psychological Capital (with Carolyn Youssef and Bruce Avolio, Oxford, 2007). The co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of World Business, Professor Luthans is also the editor for Organizational Dynamics and Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies. He has been very active in the Academy of Management over the years and was elected a fellow in 1981. He is a former president of the National Academy in 1986 and, in 1997, received the Academy's distinguished educator award. In 2000 he became an inaugural member of the Academy's Hall of Fame for being one of the “Top Five” all-time published authors in the prestigious Academy journals. Also active in the Decision Sciences Institute (DSI), he was elected a fellow in 1987. Professor Luthans has a very extensive research program at the University of Nebraska. Most recently, he has developed positive organizational behavior, or POB, (outlined in 2002 articles in the Academy of Management Executive and Journal of Organizational Behavior ) and is conducting research on positive psychological capital and, with close colleague Bruce Avolio, authentic leadership. He has been a visiting scholar at a number of universities in the United States and has lectured at universities and conducted workshops for managers in many countries around the world. In recent years, he has been actively involved in Germany, China, Thailand, Singapore, Russia, Albania, and Macedonia. In addition, he has been on the executive committee of the annual Pan Pacific Conference since its beginning in 1984 and in 1995 was elected a fellow. This international research and experience is reflected in his approach to the field of organizational behavior. In addition, he is an active consultant and trainer to both private- (such as Wal-Mart and Ameritas Life Insurance, Inc.) and public-sector organizations. Since 1998 he has been a senior research scientist with the Gallup Organization. He is an avid golfer and University of Nebraska sports fan. He and Kay, his wife of 47 years, have four grown children and so far six adorable grandchildren.

Easy to follow with interesting and up-to-date content. Clearly discusses history, politics, and ideologies with relative examples. Contains several demographic charts and data tables. However, and I actually like this, the book contains no pictures. It's my senior year of college and I am glad the authors have geared this book towards 'grown-ups'. I hate paying hundreds of dollars for books full of stock photos and subtle ads for businesses. No nonsense. So far so good.

My fiancé got this for her courses at college. I can't really review this on her behalf, because I didn't read/use this book. But hey, she passed her course so this must work!

It was a long book I can tell you that much bit it help me study and passy class with a B+. I really enjoyed reading this book. There were no pages missing or writing on it which I really liked because I didn't have to read over someone else's hand writing.

Having grown up in Cincinnati, I saw all of these Winold Reiss mosaic murals in the Cincinnati Union Terminal. The murals installed along the concourse walls were moved to the Greater Cincinnati Airport before the concourse, not the rotunda, was demolished in 1972. I do not know if all of the murals re-located to the airport are still there. I did see several of them in September 2016 when I arrived at the airport. These mosaic murals by Winold Reiss are the priceless heritage of Cincinnati and the country. It is sad to think that they are all not in the same place where they were installed back in 1933. Gretchen Garner's book is a wonderful look at the artist who created these murals.

Now, altogether, I think I like the film much better than the book, but the novel has its merits too without a doubt.I see a lot of reviews talking about how the characters were without personality, boring, unreadable, flat. In some ways I do understand the frustration. At times it's near impossible to read what is going on exactly, BUT I think I've found purpose to what so many deem madness. I mean, these are kids who woke up in a strange place with no memory of who they are, where they came from. To top it all off, they're trapped in a maze crawling with monsters at night. And no matter how much they try to escape, they can't. They have lived in a place with no idea of what they were, who they were supposed to be, or what they ARE supposed to be now. For me, it would only make sense for a stagnant environment to produce stagnation in the people occupying it. I know that may be reaching a little bit - but it's what has helped me to manage through the book with a peaked interest.I couldn't put the novel down. Overall, I find the concept of the story good. And despite the blank slates of many characters, they are still fairly likable (except for Alby. Book Alby worked my absolute last nerve. He was a complete 360 from his movie self and I have never hated a character so much so quickly. I disliked him more than Gally >:( ). All in all, the movie made me want to dive directly into The Scorch Trials, so it definitely did something right. Honestly, I think the biggest issue that most people can agree with is the lack of personality in the characters. But in my perspective, I can kind of make it work in my head! I look forward to continuing these books.

The Maze Runner? (Rolls eyes so hard she can see her brain) Meh, it was forgettable...and aggravating! In fact, I can distinctly remember the day-to-day struggle I had with the book! Days where I would dread the fact that I had to pick up The Maze Runner and suffer reading through the endless chapters that give you no answers, no purpose to The Maze, no clear objective, annoying and pointless characters that you feel no connection to, and hopelessness.Hmm, okay, have you ever played Monkey in the Middle? Well, imagine you are the monkey in the middle, you have Thomas (the lead character) on one end, and James Dashner (the author) on the other end. Okay, now imagine James Dashner holding a mysterious black velvet drawstring which holds all the answers you are dying to get your hands on. Okay, now picture Thomas and Dashner cackling as they toss the drawstring back and forth over your head. At first, you chuckle and say something like, "Oh, come on guys," then 30 chapters later, while they continue to play their silly game, you give up on the attempt to intercept the drawstring, and crossing your arms you say something like, "Okay, this is getting really annoying."Finally, after 60 chapters, you decide to walk up to Dashner and rashly kick him right on the chin and you shout, "ENOUGH!" And in your disgraceful moment of defeat and frustration, Dashner "thoughtfully" hands over the black velvet drawstring, so as to say, "All right, I'm sorry." You gasp, and then squeal, AT LAST! YOU HAVE THE ANSWERS! You fall to your knees and madly begin to open up the black velvet drawstring, "This is it! This is it!" you exclaim to yourself, only to uncover....complete and utter darkness; yep, nothing. The bag was empty the entire time.Then, as your gaze moves steadily up at Dashner, you take notice that he is frowning, and smiling, and laughing all while staring at Thomas, who is responding in the same manner. And then it hits you, they are able to converse telepathically! What in the world!? Argh!So you get up, take a deep breath, sweep whatever Dashner dust-bunnies have settled onto your jeans and shoulders, and begin to walk away from their wicked scheme; who needs those guys anyway? Rude! But just as you are storming off, Dashner runs up to you, laughing irritatingly while trying to catch his breath and says, "Okay, okay," his arms up in surrender, "I'm done, here take this, you'll want to read this," and just like that, he walks over to Thomas (who is laughing hysterically by the way), they pat themselves on the back, as to congratulate each other, and they walk away.You shake your head in utter confusion and look down at the single sheet of paper resting on the palm of your hand, you unfold it, it's an epilogue. The best darn thing Dashner wrote in the entire book!

This is a horror book filled with nastiness, lack of empathy, and most revoltingly, the idea that it's reasonable and morally correct to torture and kill children in the name of possibly saving the human race. I forced myself to finish it to see if the ending had any redeeming qualities---it does not. A "teaser" for the second book begins with a brother and sister kidnapped after watching the murder of their parents. Apparently many adults, including respected reviewers, can maintain enough emotional distance to enjoy this sort of thing, but I am not one of them. And I certainly do not regard this as appropriate for children, or even teenagers.

Most sets only have the 1st 3 books, it's nice this set has all 4 books. However this is NOT a Boxed set . This is a set of 4 books that are shrink wrapped together with a paper wrapper around the ends & back. It is not in a box, so the books are loose when the wrap is removed.

I started reading this after finishing Atkinson's "The Guns at Last Light: The War in Western Europe, 1944-1945" . I wanted to balance my reading on the European Theater of WWII with the Pacific.Toll is a good writer. His style is similar to Atkinson's in that in includes extra details that add perspective. For example, a description of the Japanese planes flying so low over Honolulu, that the Americans on the ground saw the pilots faces covered by "their cats eye flying goggles".Toll does a fairly good job at keeping the narrative level at 10,000 feet. Modern war involves men, machines, doctrine, politics and strategy. Toll's story dips into all of these, but never too deeply. Politics and some doctrine are mainly through the focus of President Roosevelt and the Hirohito (the Japanese emperor). Mahan's contribution to the footings of the combatants doctrine and strategy is emphasized. The compare and contrast between American and Japanese warfighting was instructive. I would have appreciated a deep dive into the strengths and weaknesses of the American Navy's pre-war organization. There seemed to be more of an emphasis on the Japanese weaknesses . The thumbnail description of the Japanese A6M Zero was particularly good for aircraft technology. Naval vessels and evolving marine technology get less attention. Strategy comes later with the rise of Halsey, Spruance, and Nimitz vs. Yamamoto and Nugamo.If I find fault with this book, it's that it does not cover the submarine campaign at all. There are a few scant references to submarine reconnaissance. There are also a few oblique references to the notorious 'Torpedo Problem' that plagued the fleet at the beginning of the war. However, compared to the carrier actions, there is nothing on the beginning of the submarine actions against the Japanese by boats based out of Australia and Hawaii. In addition, Japanese submarine campaign has never been documented well, at least not in English language publications. Its not documented here either.This book was very readable. It's a good beginner to intermediate introduction to the beginning of the naval war in the Pacific. This book is part of a trilogy. This is the first book. I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series "The Conquering Tide: War in the Pacific Islands, 1942-1944". The third book in the series is supposed to be published in 2018.Readers of this book might find reading books like Toland's "The Rising Sun: The Decline & Fall of the Japanese Empire, 1936-45" likewise interesting. Although, that book is dryer than this one. "Silent Victory: The U.S. Submarine War Against Japan" may be helpful in making up for lack of coverage of the submarine campaign.

Pacific Crucible, the War at Sea 1941-1942 is the first volume of a three-book series by Ian W. Toll. This review covers Pacific Crucible and The Conquering Tide, the second volume in the series. I have not read the third volume, The Fleet at Flood Tide.Ian W. Toll is a gifted writer. He manages to plug in interesting details, gluing the reader to the page. While most of these tidbits are not of immense importance, they are exactly what makes reading history fascinating. Mr. Toll moves a story along at speed, avoiding wording and phrasing leading to boredom. Pacific Crucible and The Conquering Tide are appealing as fact based books and as compelling stories.Pacific Crucible begins at Pearl Harbor and explains Japanese decision making behind the raid. The author points out how the attack impacted the Japanese command structure, a detail often omitted in other histories. Ian Toll carefully points out that the main targets of Yamamoto’s attack were the American aircraft carriers, none of which were in port. He also describes the main Japanese offensive moves into Southeast Asia, which secured the oil and other military necessities for Japan. All this is done in a fast moving style that leaves the reader anticipating the next sentence.The author is even handed in his evaluation of the leaders on both sides. Yamamoto’s attack plan was good, but far from perfect. The American military leaders General Short and Admiral Kimmel were unjustly charged with dereliction of duty in the defense of Pearl Harbor, even though they certainly made mistakes. Admiral King is evaluated well and his faults are disclosed along with his ability to lead the Navy in a tough time. All the leaders Mr. Toll discusses, Japanese and American, are approached with respect as well as an opened eyed realism.The Conquering Tide tells the story of the Pacific War after Guadalcanal and details how the Japanese were defeated by American ingenuity, bravery, and industrial power. It is clear that the Japanese were hampered by pre-set conclusions concerning how the war would be fought and how the Americans would fail in the face of the spiritual superiority of their enemies. The Japanese leadership was stunned by the speed of the American advance across the Pacific, and the power of the Pacific Fleet by the end of 1943. Ian Toll tells us of the many false assumptions made by Japan and the helplessness felt by the population as their leaders became oppressive and outright stupid in their handling of the people during the war.Like any author telling any story Ian Toll has his failings. All major battles are covered, most not in deep detail; however, some events, such as the first few voyages of the Wahoo, are reported in extreme detail. In other cases, Mr. Toll fails to adequately discuss items that were important to the Pacific theater of war. The horrible failure of Admiral King to adopt the convoy system at the outset of war, and its costs, are not well explained and lost to the reader. The story of American torpedo failures is split up and difficult to follow.In this old warrior’s opinion, the author is too soft on some of the personalities he reviews. MacArthur is one example. He changed War Plan Orange and adopted junk in its place, and his superiors in Washington allowed it. Why? After the outright debacle following Pearl Harbor and the complete destruction of US air power in the Philippines, with consequences at least as bad as Pearl Harbor, he stayed in command. Why? Mr. Toll does complain about MacArthur, but he does not tell us he was incompetent. In fact, he more or less defends MacArthur’s leadership. It is the same with several other leaders. Mr. Toll gives them the benefit of the doubt too often.I enjoyed both books and highly recommend them for anyone interested in World War II in the Pacific

The authors define a "killer application" as "a new good or service that establishes an entirely new category and, by being first, dominates it, returning several hundred percent on the initial investment." As they explain, the primary forces at work in spawning today's "killer apps" are both technological and economic in nature. "The technology we are concerned with is the transformation of information into digital form, where it can be manipulated by computers and transmitted by networks." Digital strategies are needed to achieve market dominance. They suggest several, each worthy of careful consideration. For me, this book has two great values: It helps us to understand what a "killer app" is and can accomplish; also, for those lacking a "killer app" and without much chance of possessing one, it suggests how to increase and enhance the appeal of what one does have, such as it is. Given a choice, of course, anyone would prefer to have a "killer app" when proceeding into an uncertain future. Lacking one, there are still opportunities to recognize...and to pursue. Most companies will not dominate but can survive if committed to the appropriate strategies. For them, this book could well be the difference between life and death.

I was disappointed. The 12 principles were so vague as to be useless. As a web developer, every time I read these so-called strategy books I'm so disappointed. They're all written the same way -- the author makes some kind of statement that they think is profound, like "Treat your customers as a market segment of 1" then they write about one or two companies they've found that supposedly follow this statement. Well guess what, for every "principle" you can find a company that violates it and is wildly successful. For example, Microsoft doesn't treat it's customers as a "market segment of 1" and it's kicking *ss. I can easily find examples of successful web companies that don't follow the authors' principles, which leaves me wondering about how serious to take them.

If you ever want to read a book that attempts to use every technology buzzword in existance, this is the one. This book has some interesting examples of companies that are gaining a competitive advantage using technology, but the author's try to be a little too "cute" with their knowledge of industry buzzwords. Give only a cursory reading of part 1 or just skip it and go right to part 2 and 3.One thing that really annoyed me thoughout the book was the author's attempts to create then overuse something called Metcalf's Law and Moore's Law out of a couple of common sense observations. In each chapter, the authors constantly refered back to Metcalf's Law and Moore's Law as if these "laws" are on the same plateau as some created by Einstein. Both Metcalf and Moore are intellegent, excellent inventors, and astute businessmen, but I would never try to create some "law" out of a couple of common sense observations. After reading this book, I envision the authors having statues of Metcalf and Moore in their offices that they kneel in front of daily for inspiration.My opinion, don't spend your own money on this book. Borrow it or get your company to pay for it.

This book is thought provoking, but lacks detail and any real clear strategy for unleashing killer apps. The authors appear to lack a fundamental understanding of economics, most glaringly the definition of a public good. (For the record, a public good is both non-rival and non-excludable.) The real-world examples in the book lack precision and fail to inform the reader of how to uncover his or her own killer app. As a primer in e-strategy, it's not bad. But it won't get you much further than first base.

The forward from Nicholas Negroponte should have been warning enough. Another "new-era-economy meets the internet" book crying out for attention, with plenty of stories, but little hard evidence or data. Many false economic assumptions. They do make the obvious case for the impact of information technology, but never bother to address some fundamental questions. For example, why hasn't productivity (as measured by GDP/capita) increased (at all) with Moore's Law and the advent of electronic commerce?
