This 10th volume presents Donald Duck comics from 1951 and as always Carl Barks produces consistent, high quality stories. The first tale includes the initial introduction of the Beagle Boys. They have just a single panel, non-speaking appearance which is ironic given that the volume is called, ‘Terror of the Beagle Boys’ The story summary synopsis pointed out that in this first appearance the Beagle Boys are wearing colored beanies and colorful shirts reminiscent of Donald’s nephews as if they were criminal versions of the boys. The next story has Donald and his nephews in Riviera where apparently half the population is composed of spies. The most interesting feature of this story is that all of the humans are drawn as humans rather than the strange animal/human hybrids that Barks was known for drawing. The slightly anthropomorphized animalish human look was imposed on Barks by Disney and apparently this was his last attempt to draw humans without snouts and dog ears. Personally I always found Barks animal/human hybrids weird like something out of Dr. Moreau but even these regular humans look a bit off. He probably should have just gone all in with regular anthropomorphized characters like most funny animal artists did.There are three 28 page stories including ‘Dangerous Disguise’, ‘No Such Varmint’ and ‘Old California’. The rest are 10 pages stories and for whatever reason this particular span of time has no single page gags. It is with ‘No Such Varmint’ that the book gets going. Donald decides he wants a career in snake charming (to the embarrassment of his nephews) and I had to laugh as Donald blissfully pursued his dream even as the boys tried to steer him into a more respectable field. The next story, ‘A Financial Fable’, is another great one and managed to earn itself its own Wikipedia entry. It’s been described as politically right-wing (which I am not) but it’s well written and makes a good point that if everyone is wealthy then wealth means nothing. My favorite quote is Uncle Scrooge saying, “I wish people weren’t so darned crazy about money! They make me nervous!” Classic.According to the summary ‘Old California’ was Carl Barks all-time favorite story (although I swear I’ve heard that about other stories) but for me I preferred the 10 page ‘Pool Sharks’. Donald decides to have a pool built (and I love the way Barks draws it the beautiful 1950’s style) but it ends up getting taken over by the neighborhood kids. The parents are angry because they see the pool as a health hazard and threaten to tar and feather Donald which is hilarious because… you know. Sadly, there are no holiday themed stories which I always love but we do get one camping story (love the outdoors). “Ten-Star Generals” is a great Junior Woodchucks story as Donald compares the Woodchucks to his own experience in the Boneheads, I mean Booneheads as in Daniel Boone. “Attic Antics” is the only story not written by Carl Barks and it shows. It’s also the only story with no appearance by Donald, his nephews or Uncle Scrooge. One lesson from this story is that the usually impeccable Barks seems to have problems drawing Peg-Leg Pete.Volume 15, coming out in September, will include the years 1954 and 1955. We are still less than halfway through the scheduled 30 volumes but I’m wondering when Fantagraphics will be releasing volume 1 through 4 containing stories prior to 1947. I own all 10 volumes published thus far and I expect to continue collecting to completion. Fantagraphics does a great job with restoring the images and I always look forward to the story analysis at the end of the book although somehow “The Trouble with Dimes” appears to have been skipped. This is the first story I’ve ever seen that didn’t get a summary. I complained in my review of the previous volume that the analysis was starting to become little more than plot summaries but things are improved this time around. Pick up the latest volume and enjoy.

This is a copy of the review I left on another volume. But the review is for the series as a whole, and this is the kind of series where people might pick up a volume or two non-sequentially, so I'm leaving this review in a few places.I've been reading Carl Barks since I was a kid. My dad grew up with the old comics and passed them along to me. I still fondly remember the smell of the pages and have a soft spot for that type of thing. If I see one at a garage sale, I'll often pick it up, even if it's pretty battered.I've purchased newer versions of Barks' works over the years. I have the complete set of the Carl Barks Library that was published in the 90s by Gladstone. That is a beautiful set. Slightly larger than originally published with updated coloring techniques - mainly you'll see color gradients and wider palette compared to the original - or this edition here which stays true to the original coloring. However, I have a new generation to give my old Gladstone copies to.At first I planned on giving these to the niece and nephews, but when I got the first one I liked it so much I decided to give them the Gladstone ones instead and keep these for myself. ;) My niece and nephews are pretty young still, all under six, so the Gladstone books are easier for them to handle. These books are better for readers closer to 8-10 due to the size. They are hefty and well built, a little like a grade-school textbook in bulk. They look wonderful on the shelf all lined up. And what's extra nice for me, they have a lot more of the comics in each volume, so I can keep one by the bed and read a few each night for a while before swapping to the next.For people who've never read Carl Barks and are looking for something for yourself or for your kids, these are just the ticket. If you liked the DuckTales, you might be surprised to learn that some of the best DuckTales episodes were taken straight from Barks' Duck stories. Barks is a big part of what made DuckTales so great, since they had a wealth of adventures to pull from. Barks writes well. He doesn't write down to kids. Instead, he writes a great adventure tale and peppers it with names and places and characters that keep the kids interested. These are the best types of kids stories, because much like Pixar's work, it makes it so much more fun to take part in your kids interests if the stories aren't dumbed down. Creators have proven you don't need to do that to keep a child's interest and Barks illustrates that viewpoint perfectly.The art in the comics is also fun and expressive, with clean lines and not a lot of clutter, Barks gets a lot of emotion into a simple panel. Even the kids who aren't as good at reading yet can follow along. Barks also uses real places - he loved reading National Geographic and including those locales in his work. For a kid's comic, it's fairly sophisticated, but accessible.As far as value is concerned, this set is incomparable. I mentioned I've been buying Barks' work for years. This is by far the most affordable I've seen yet. While the Gladstone version was beautiful, now you'd be hard-pressed to get a volume for under $10 and most are closer to $20, with more than a few going for far more than that. It was a major investment for me when I got them, both in time and in money - hunting down all the volumes took a while since they're out of print. There were nearly 150 volumes of all his stories, and you only got five or less stories in each one. While I was glad to have them at the time since the only other complete collection was in black and white, if this set had been out at the same time I would have picked it up instead without a second thought.The hardbacks are durable and there are easily twice as many stories in each volume as the Gladstone versions. And while I've seen some comments that these are not identical to the originals in every single way - the covers are in the back, the original publisher information isn't printed on the page - those are gripes primarily for collectors. People new to the series, or introducing them to their kids won't have those issues with the comics.My highest recommendation!

Carl Barks never wrote a bad story, and this volume contains some of his best. We get classic book length adventure stories like "DangerousDisguise" (where Barks experimented with human supporting characters instead of the dog-faced ones he usually employed); "No Such Varmint"and "Donald Duck in Old California". As for the ten pagers herein that Barks originally wrote and drew for Walt Disney's Comics and Storiesstandouts include "Terror of the Beagle Boys" (their first appearance), "A Financial Fable" (Uncle $crooge loses his fortune, and isn't worried abit-he knows he'll get it back!), and "Pool Sharks". While Huey, Dewey and Louie are away, Donald , fed up with gardening, has a swimmingpool installed, a decision he later regrets.Fantagraphics is doing a great job with these books. It's good that these Carl Barks classics are available, and at very affordable prices!

As with all the volumes in this series, this is an excellent book. Just wish they'd be released a little more frequently. Worth the wait, though.

Carl Barks does know how to tell a story. The drawing is excellent.

Book is rearranged by features of virus rather than family of virus, which makes it slightly bit confusing to navigate. However, the different organization standards is useful when trying to compare the viruses. All in all, I really do like this book.

It's okay for basic virology, bit this book goes into so much detail that I have a hard time understanding sometimes and often need to use the authetic internet websites.

It was required. Came as promised. Didn't really read much if it.

This is listed as a bundle (which to me implied 2 books as pictured). When it arrived not only was it just one book, but it was volume 2.

I highly recommend this translation of Dante's Inferno. For many years, Ciardi's translation has been the standard and it has much to recommend it. But Ciardi's rhymed stanzas are looser, wordier, and less faithful to the original than Thornton's blank verse. Thornton brings us closer to what Dante wrote. And the excellent notes at the end of each canto help bring this masterpiece to life for a modern reader.

With decades of study and meticulous craftsmanship, Dr. Peter Thornton has offered his translation of “The Inferno.” I do not know Italian, but I have read a couple of other translations of “The Inferno,” and I found this one the best for several reasons. First, the poetry is vivid. I felt like orange flames and the stench of Sulphur were my companions as much as were Dante and Virgil.The verse itself is a second reason I liked this translation. The meter – iambic pentameter, the ordinary meter of the English language – does not intrude into the poetry itself. That is, I wasn’t conscious of stretching of words or awkward diction for the sake of the meter.You can enjoy the translation without bothering to read the footnotes, but once you start, you are off on another journey, equally absorbing – this one through contemporary (to Dante) Florentine history, Christian metaphors and allusions, Roman legend and mythology, and Catholic scholars from Augustine on.Read the translation; savor the footnotes. There’s always room for a fresh version of hell.

THANK YOU !! I've been trying to expose my kids to more of the classics. But every translation of the Divine Comedy I've come across has been so difficult that I couldn't even get through Hell (felt like hell trying to read it). UNTIL NOW !!! Thank you Mr. Douglas Neff for this translation. It keeps all the flavor, tension, and character; and stays true to the original story. Reading this translation, I find myself more absorbed and engaged in trying to understand what Dante was trying to get across, and why he picked certain persons for certain levels, and doing research into some of the people, places, vices, etc. that he talks about, instead of spending hours trying to decipher the actual language of the translation. My 7 year old is totally engaged, while at the same time, my 15 year old and I are getting into some very interesting discussions (Dante put Pope Celestine V with those souls who neither heaven nor hell want, because he resigned as Pope . . . I wonder what that means for old former pope Benedict XVI / cardinal Ratzinger who just did the same thing). And none of us are getting ground down by having to stop and try and translate the language.I cannot encourage you strongly enough to get this book. You will not be disappointed. I'm now trying to find a comparable translation of Purgatory and Paradise so we can complete the story.

Dante's THE INFERNO is a classic. Written around 1321, the book predates most of the classics, except Homer's works of course. But even before Shakespeare, this book heralded in an uncommonly twisted and almost perverse story of Dante's descent into Hell and his description of everything he sees and those he meets. It's eloquently written. Not necessarily an easy read but it does tribute to the language and reminds the reader that our vernacular has so much more color than the reductio ad absurdum we see being used today. Dante's descriptions of the nightmare that sinners endure at each level is pretty graphic, sometimes bordering on horrifying, and who knows, he might even be credited with the first narrative on the subject of flesh-eating zombies which are so popular today. The narrative also gives the reader a feel for certain historical relevancies of that and earlier times and how Dante saw the world. This particular version of the book, by John Ciardi, provides excellent descriptive notes after each section, clarifying things mentioned in the story so the reader stays on track. Lastly, I could not help but wonder if the Vatican of that time didn't encourage the book to be written simply because of its thematic message of what happens to sinners, particularly those who sin against God and the Church or become apostates. It certainly provides compelling imagery to anyone who believes in Heaven and Hell. Add it to your reading arsenal - it's worth the read.

Great book for beginning practitioners. Easy to read and enjoyed very much the personal stories. I think it helps to normalize the use of hypnosis by a qualified licensed practitioner.The only change I would make is to use the word "hypnotherapist" rather than "hypnotist". It certainly has a different connotation.I purchased this book from Amazon.

Good book, lots of good ideas. I have studied and used hypnosis on myself and family and clients for years. His format is such that you can read a page at a time, which I appreciate. He has some nice free sessions on YouTube too. I have several of his books.

Very helpful.Have stopped feeling like there's something wrong with ME and instead focus on learning to cope productively with spouse's anger issues. How to change myself, not spouse. It's all about boundaries. Too much advice out there offers ending relationships, which is absurd if the relationship is long, committed, and essentially good. Dr Nay recognizes that simply leaving a partner isn't always an acceptable option. He offers useful strategies instead, ones that help repair damaged self-esteem and futile responses to someone else's issues. Thanks Dr Nay.

This was an excellent self help book filled with practical workable solutions on ways to help one who is in a relationship with an angry person. Through practicing the exercises I gained insight and emotional strength and realized that I deserved better and that I didn't HAVE to be in the relationship so I ended it!

Finally! A book on anger that makes sense and is "usable" with clients. Since finding this book and it's companion about managing anger, I feel I can actually make a difference with folks who have learned to express anger in ways that are harmful to their lives. Dr. Nay is easy to understand and each chapter logically builds on the previous one.

Author W. Robert Nay covers the issues of dealing with angry partners in a clear and succinct manner. We can't change them! It was both disturbing and refreshing to realize that I wasn't the only person to ever deal with this kind of relationship. Thank you for giving me insight and tools to better handle myself in this situation.

This is an impeccably researched and referenced account of the Theranos saga. As a long-time observer and sometime competitor of Theranos I watched this tale unfold whilst working at a couple of established IVD companies. Everyone I knew who had ever developed an assay or instrument knew this was smoke and mirrors, impossibly too good to be true. What I never suspected was just how personally dishonest EH had been, and for how long the complex deception was maintained. Whilst I've met a few egregious individuals working for big companies, there are enough checks and balances (QA/RA, Med/Sci Affairs, CLSs and other professionals etc) in place to stop harmful devices getting out the door.The subject matter - developing devices and assays - is a complex dry topic, difficult to write engagingly about. But JC does a workmanlike job and I read this in one go after its midnight Kindle release. My only nit to pick is the poor editing: there are so many uses of '....named....' as in 'an engineer named John Smith' or 'a restaurant named Joe's Bar' that it got irritating. Find/replace 'named' with a comma would have worked fine in most cases. The text was also repetitive - eg '...an award named after Channing...' gets at least 2 mentions. But not enough to lose a star.Kudos to the good people at Theranos who had the courage to get the story out and for JCs persistence into a headwind of legalistic intimidation. I've heard Theranos is now a case-study for MBA students: this book should be required reading for anyone thinking about 'disrupting' the medical devices industry. There are lives at stake.

I started this book and could not put it down. It's a horrifying true story of a driven entrepreneur whose only overriding goal was to become insanely rich. And she would do anything, any unimagineable thing, to get there.Elizabeth Holmes leveraged her family's high profile connections to draw in early investors and supporters, who were not very inquisitive on details, nor very skeptical in nature. Drawing on the good name and reputation of these early supporters, she was able to build an impressive roster of other supporters with stellar reputations in tech and venture capital circles. From there, it was just a matter of stage managing the house of cards she was building.Holmes crafted a Potemkin village that had fooled investors, customers, and visiting dignitaries. Her product demonstrations were outright theater, staged managed illusions worthy of David Copperfield. Theranos employees in on the ruse were assured it was just temporary, until the actual product could be perfected and the results repeatable. That day would never come. Those on the outside who also worked in this field had well founded and grave doubts about how Theranos could be touting a product that seemingly defied both logic and physics. Their suspicions, proven to be correct, was that it was too good to be true.Without a trace of guilt or regret, she induced powerful tech workers to leave lucrative careers at other major tech firms, giving up millions in stock options, to come work for Theranos, surely knowing the whole thing would collapse one day. When skeptical board members asked to see data affirming the effectiveness of their product, Holmes would defer, saying those papers were in perpetual legal review. Some employees, when they were no longer useful to her, or deemed disloyal, were immediately and unceremoniously marched out.This is a real life thriller, the story of someone who is a true diabolical movie villain. Holmes is portrayed vividly as a paranoid sociopath who could also be disarming, charmingly manipulative, utterly ruthless and devoid of conscience. This is a tale of corporate greed and lack of regulatory oversight gone all awry.

It takes a mighty strong person and an incredible investigative journalist to take down a multibillion company lead by a CEO and her partner who are doing nothing but telling lies, mistreating their employees, taking millions of dollars under false pretenses from Fortune 500 businesses and wealthy investors, betraying their esteemed board members, and worst and most harmful of all, putting the lives of their end customers in serious jeopardy because the technology that they claim to have engineered does not exist nor has it been FDA approved or tested. This is John Carreyrou’s BAD BLOOD: SECRETS AND LIES IN A SILICON VALLEY STARTUP. Carreyrou went to monumental lengths over the course of several years, with the help of named and unnamed sources who worked or were connected to Theranos, the company, which claimed to have created a blood-testing device that with ‘one drop of blood’ could obtain hundreds of test results thus saving lives. It is equally astonishing how so many smart, successful people were not taken aback by her freakish obsession with imitating Steve Jobs. Perhaps, they chalked this up to her eccentricity.It took courage for people to come forward. They were threatened with lawsuits that could bankrupt them ten times over, by one of the leading and most intimidating litigators in the country. Carreyrou, a Pulitzer Prize winning investigative journalist, who has been with The Wall Street Journal for almost 10 years, had the support of his editor, newspaper, and its attorneys. He never thought for a minute to back down. A very good book. Great plot. Unfortunately, the previous book really needs to have been read to fully appreciate this one. Nevertheless, I did enjoy the book and will read the next one. Flynn does a great job humanizing his characters and outing the corrupt politicians ubiquitous pursuit of power. The main story is about a bunch of cowardly Muslims who attack innocent people to make themselves seem righteous in their own eyes. The hero pursues them and they die. There are a lot of side stories in this book as well and a couple of them didn't really get wrapped up very well, but overall very good book.

Been reading the entire Mitch Rapp series. As soon as I approach the last pages of one I am already ordering the next! This series gets better and better. (Unfortunately, author Vince Flynn, has passed away from cancer. He was definitely taken away from us way too soon.) Therefore, I have finished this novel and the final Flynn novel, "The Last Man". Sadly, especially after "The Last Man", I want more of Mitch Rapp. Mr. Flynn's friend will be taking over the series and a new Mitch Rapp novel is scheduled for September(?). I only hope that this new author can keep the series going with the flair that Mr. Flynn had.Awesome series, great storylines, real-to-life theories, excellent characters, believable with a dusting of fiction...

Vince Flynn is one of my favorite authors. Sad he died so young. Mitch Rapp will win your heart if your a man or woman. Irene Kennedy is the director of the Central Intelligence Agency and is like a sister to Mitch instead of his BOSS. Every book can stand on its own. I have read several not in order and found "Kill Shot" and really enjoyed a very young Mitch. A friend going through chemo has thanked me for suggesting Flynn's books while he's in the hospital for hours. Try them...I have read "Transfer of Power" twice.

Can't think of anything about this book I like. What I dislike the most is the nauseating diatribe for the far right view. Also disliked the shallow plot. Not a good book. In fact, it is Flynn's worst, in my opinion.

Very good writing and storyline but that's exactly what we've come to expect and receive from Vince Flynn. He never disappoints. I got a little weary of the Nash character, though. Hopefully, we're done with him as a major player.Though a standalone book, this is also a sequel to the previous book. I don't care for that feature and it's the only two books in the Rapp series done that way so rest easy - that's over now.

Book number 13 of a 18 book action mystery series in the Mitch Rapp universe, chronologically. I read the excellently bound and printed large format MMPB. There will be more in the series as the family has hired a new writer.A terrorist cell has made it into the USA and has a plan. Mitch Rapp and the gang are desperately trying ti catch up to them. The story goes on from there.My rule is that if a book makes me stay up at night to finish it, it is a five star book.

This is a reread for me. I'm reading some books in the series before SURVIVOR comes out next week. I think most women would love to love a man like Mitch who is the top CIA operative. He's a man's man and a real catch for women.This novel dealt with terrorists from al-Qaeda. Three of them manage to kill about 200 Americans. Mitch has to not only deal with terrorists and politicians, but traitors too. Then his best friend's daughter is kidnapped by two of the terrorists and Mike Nash wants to trade his life for his daughter's. Old Hurley is still in Mitche's life and business, even though he is officially retired. Great read. I highly recommend everything Vince Flynn has ever written.

Great story. A lot of characters to keep track of but well worth the time. I was on the edge of my seat from start to finish. There was a short story continuation from the previous book in the series. Mitch Rapp made quick work of that issue...Now terrorists are training in South America for there big attack on America. Their plans partially succeed but now three of them are on the run in heartland. There is politics, agency infighting and lots more in this book.

First of all, you have to be willing to believe that hypnosis or self-hypnosis will work for you. Not everyone buys into it and that's okay; it's not necessarily for everyone. For me, however, I have found hypnosis to be an effective tool for insomnia and anxiety in the past. I bought this cd on a whim and based on the reviews. Prior to using the cd I stayed hungry all the time... and I truly mean ALL THE TIME. I have not lost any weight with the product but I have found myself ordering healthier foods when I go out to eat (more veggies, less fats) and I also snack less at night, a bad habit that I have had for years. If I do have a snack a night it is light and I don't have to have a lot of it.I believe that the author/speaker relates that bringing the subconsious with the desires of the consious is a key element in success. While I have not lost any weight, I have not gained any either. I realize that I need to implement an exercise regimen into my life now to get things back to where they need to be.On a side note, this cd is very relaxing and, if nothing else, will help to put you to sleep - so there's a double benefit for you. I totally reccomend this to anyone with sleep problems or hunger problems.The reason I didn't give it all 5 stars: there's more to getting thin than relaxing... there's got to be some calorie burn in there as well... so the title is a bit misleading. However, this is a great product and, as I said before, I highly reccomend it.

I would have to disagree with Karen K who said the voice and music were irratating. I found the narrators' voice to be extremely soothing and the music to be beneficial and relaxing. In fact, for all the hypnosis tapes I've ever used, this is by far the most relaxing. I'm able to go into an extremely deep trance and always come out with the suggestion at the end (that's how I know I didn't just fall asleep). I only gave it 4 stars so far, but will update it in a couple of weeks when I see how well it works. I've been using it twice a day for two days, today is the third, and haven't seen any changes in my appetite or eating yet. It says to use it for 21 days. I don't know if that means you'll only see significant results after 21 days, or what, but I'll keep this review updated to let you know if I've lost any weight. If not, then at least I have had some incredibly relaxing sessions while I'm listening to the tape.Day Five: I found when I went to the market I chose only healthy foods and stayed away from the junk food without even thinking about it. I checked the fat content on all food even if it said "light" or "low fat." When I saw chocolate and thought I'd like some it was immediately followed up with the thought that I didn't want to buy it. The hardest part is getting out of the store without the junk in the cart. At home, I've noticed I have not wanted to eat between meals.

In life, we all make decisions. Sometimes we made decisions about what we want to do for a living. Other times we finally make the decision to commit to lose weight. I made a decision to purchase Beverly Hills Hypnosis' Relax Your Way to Thin Hypnosis Weight Loss Motivation. I wonder if the hypnosis activities involved made me forget why I ever thought this could possibly ever work. Perhaps that was the magic of the hypnosis....making me forget my stupidity. No, this didn't work. It was stupid. It doesn't work. It was ridiculous!!!

I was hesitant to buy/try this, because the whole "hypnosis" thing is scary for me. It seemed dangerous to put my naked psyche in the hands of someone I don't know. But I've struggled so much with compulsive binge eating that I didn't know what else to try. I don't, or should say, didn't overeat because of hunger. I would continue to eat far past being full. Diet pills, even though they effectively removed my hunger, didn't help. I was responding to something inside that drove me to stuff myself with food. What this CD has done for me is this: I no longer want to eat when I am full, and foods that I used to eat un-controllably - that I craved and ate 'til I was stuffed, no longer have power over me. I'll eat a little of them and am satisfied. I really am still shocked that this worked. I am changed, and am losing weight without even trying. I enjoy food, instead of being afraid of it. Plus I now have a different idea of hypnosis. Have you ever listened to guided meditation? It's just like that except the words being spoken are positive reinforcements along the lines of eating healthfully. Nothing spooky about it, just relaxing and powerful! I'm going to buy another CD to work on another personal issue.

I loved this CD. His voice and the music are very soothing. If you don't want people to tell you exactly what to eat, this is for you. "Low carb" is great for me because I always read nutritional values and can decide what foods contain the number of carbs I need. Some people say he is too quick and for some, that's the way they like it. I prefer that people be more goal oriented and not tell me about the history of hypnotism, why I should like it, compare it to things to which it has no relation, and other concepts unnescesary to the task.

This is a wonderful product. I had never done hypnosis before this and thought I would give it a try. To my delight, it really works! It has changed my way of thinking. I use it every night just as I am going to bed and I am so relaxed and sleep very well after the deep relaxation from the hypnosis. It is more than about weight loss. It helps to change your way of thinking to a more healthy way of eating and motivates you to change your life in positive ways. It is more about a lifestyle change than just losing weight. I would highly recommend this to anyone. It will change your life.

This CD worked great for me. I am very easily hypnotized.I have other hypnosis tapes... yes!...they are on tape... and I wanted to upgrade to a CD.I was pleased with the pkg, the promptness of the mailing, and the quality of the CD.It is what I expected and am pleased.I would order again.I listen to it at night and I fall asleep with it playing and it still works for me.I am losing wt. º
