Hidden: A Child's Story of the Holocaust

From School Library Journal

Gr 3–6—Elsa and her grandmother Dounia can't fall asleep one night, and the little girl begs the older woman to share the reason for her sadness. Dounia recounts her experience as a Jewish child in Nazi-occupied Paris in 1942. Heartbreaking incidents, such as being ostracized by a teacher and former friends or having to don a yellow a star, are told from a child's perspective, filled with confusion and innocence. Eventually, the little girl is hidden under a panel in her family's wardrobe as police vandalize her home and arrest her parents. Neighbors, the Pericards, rescue Dounia and adopt her while they try to locate her mother and father, who have been transferred to a concentration camp. Dauvillier doesn't shy away from the brutal truth in this portrayal of the Holocaust. Interspersed with Dounia's flashbacks are present-day moments of dialogue between the narrator and Elsa, which are depicted in brown and tan hues. Elsa asks questions and offers comments that young readers might also be grappling with while reading this tale. Lizano's stylized illustrations depict characters with oversize heads, reminiscent of "Peanuts" comics, giving this difficult subject an age-appropriate touch. The subdued palette of blues and greens match the story's tone, and the plethora of images highlighting meals, country scenes, and family time places more emphasis on the people who helped one another during this terrible period than on the heinous acts committed. The final image, one of familial love and peace, will pull heartstrings. Pair this poignant graphic novel with Lois Lowry's Number the Stars (Houghton Mifflin, 1989).—Shelley Diaz, School Library Journal

From Booklist

Worried that her grandmother has had a nightmare, a young girl offers to listen to the story, hoping to ease her grandmother’s mind. And for the first time since her own childhood, the grandmother opens up about her life during WWII, the star she had to wear, the disappearance of her parents, and being sent to the country where she had to lie about her name and her beliefs. Every year, more stories set during the Holocaust are released, many for children, and this one is particularly well done. Dauvillier doesn’t sugarcoat the horrors of the Holocaust; instead, he shares them from the perspective of a girl young enough to not quite understand the true scope of the atrocities. Set in occupied France, the story told is honest and direct, and each scene is revealed with care. The frankness of the storytelling is tempered by appealing cartoonlike illustrations that complement the story and add a layer of emotion not found in the narration. A Holocaust experience told as a bedtime story? It sounds crazy, but here it works. Grades K-3. --Eva Volin

I’m surprised no reviews mentioned the scene about Isaac having to pull husband’s pants down. I don’t think circumcism is an appropriate topic for me to talk with my young students about. I’m returning the book because I don’t want it on my shelf for them to read even though the story is told well. Age is way off

This is an excellent story of a young Jewish girl in Paris who survives the Nazi domination by hiding with protectors. It is told with such an authentic voice and with such immediacy that even young school age children will gain an understanding of that incomprehensible time. With older students this could be paired with Sarah's Key for some very complex discussions.

This a gorgeous book, even though it is on such a serious topic. At first, I did not realize it was a graphic novel, but when I started to read it, I seriously could not put it down. Its title is accurate, and it gives kids a unique perspective on the Holocaust, one they might have an easier time understaning.

My daughter does not like reading (stark contrast to her older brother who blows through novels in a few days!)! She has, however, found a fondness for graphic novels. I purchased this one just hoping it would grab her attention, and it did!! I am amazed at how much she retained from reading and how detailed her explanation of the book is. It sparked a great conversation about the Holocaust, and I may have even talked her into reading The Diary of Anne Frank!!

Very good book done in comic book style. Gets the message across very well without being graphic for younger kids.

I added this to my collection of holocaust books for my students. They really enjoyed the read!

Well written. A good addition to ones collection of Holocaust books for children.

It is a little jewel, heartbreakingly moving, reviving memories. Both the artwork and the words. I have passes it on, it should be read by all.

Good for additional book for preparing the exam.

Awesome book

Very nice book. Easy to read and all written in understandable form.

What I liked:1) Small examples. Since I was able to download source code, I could try on my own2) Exam tips sprinkled all around the book were useful when taking the exam3) The day before the exam I went through the summary in each chapter and it helped answering some exam questions correctlyWhat could be better:1) One more mock test would have helped

Its a best book for understanding Java 8 in detailed. I started reading this book just for having glimpse of Java 8 additions, however ended up reading whole book. All over the book, I personally liked the way topics are explained with aptly hand picked examples. This book starts with FAQ which explains in-and-out of OCPJP, a nice start for any newbies. Authors covered Java 8 specific features like Lambda Expressions, Stream API, parallel streams for concurrency and new Date API in clear manner. However it doesn't mean they left out basics though, core java concepts also manifested in deep. As a final touch, there was a fine collection of questions under the title "Mock Exam".

As an experienced Java programmer, I planned to take OCP certification and was looking for a book that could help me on getting up to the speed with new concepts such as lambdas, functional interfaces and streams.I am truly amazed by the content of the book especially the exam watch tips provided through out the book and Question time section provided at the end of each chapter. The questions in this book are of high quality and tricky, with the detailed explanation to each Q & A made me to understand the concepts very well and I could gauge how the real exam questions can fool me.

I was looking out for quality sample questions to prepare for OCPJP 8 exam but also wanted to read about Java 8 features. So I bought this book and Java 8 features were explained in detail with amusing examples. Also the questions in each chapter of the book are of high quality and the mock exam is really good. A good read.

Good book. Since the source code is available for free download, trying out the programs along with reading helped in having better understanding of the concepts. I think ocpjava.wordpress.com is also maintained by authors, I find very useful resources there.

Inside Charlie's Chocolate Factory: The Complete Story of Willy Wonka, the Golden Ticket, and Roald Dahl's Most Famous Creation., by Lucy Mangan

From School Library Journal

Gr 6 Up— In time for the 50th anniversary of Roald Dahl's classic, this work takes an in-depth look at the origins of the iconic tale of Charlie and his golden ticket. In an almost-scholarly tone, each chapter covers a distinct topic, such as the British author's inspiration for the beloved title, the book's impact on popular culture, and comparisons among and the reception of the various film and stage adaptations. Part biography, part history, Managan's work explores Dahl's tragic family history and relationships with the editors and illustrators that helped him bring his iconic story to life. Especially interesting is the discussion of the initial critical reactions (even mostly harsh ones from the librarian community), because of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory's irreverent humor and hard honest look at the flaws of the human character. Kids might be turned off by the nostalgic sensibility of the text and the sometimes over-the-top (and corny) jokes, but this title will especially strike a chord with fans of Dahl's work, students of classic children's literature, and those interested in the early days of modern publishing. The thorough back matter, including archival, full-color photos; extensive bibliography and further reading lists; delightful illustrations and reproductions; and quotations from those intimately connected with the various iterations, make this a stand-out title for creative writing, English, popular culture, film, and kid lit courses. Especially useful for making comparisons across media, this book ensures that Dahl's legacy will endure as long as an everlasting gobstopper.—Shelley Diaz, School Library Journal

Awesome!! Great detail and it separates the info between the book, movies, musicals etc. Every Willy Wonka fan's dream!!

Purchased as a gift. Arrived quickly and exactly as advertised. Thanks!

Wonderful book!! My Mom loved it and she is a die hard fan of the factory books!!

Falsely advertised! The book received is a “partial blast showing selected pages” and not the complete 224 page book I thought I was purchasing. Nowhere does it explain this!

Fans of Roald Dahl and of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory have a lot to be thankful for in this delectable book. In this year when we celebrate the Golden Anniversary of Charlie, this well-written book is a timely tribute to the story and its impact on our lives.Guardian journalist Lucy Mangan writes this book in an engaging, accessible way. She writes as someone who knows and loves her subject matter. It examines the origins of the story, its various adaptations, its impact on popular culture and even the Wonka sweet spin-offs inspired by the book. It is a detailed, thorough, behind-the-scenes tour of the book and its adaptations. She even offers up her thoughts on what made each adaptation work even though she betrays a slight bias to the Gene Wilder film of 1971. The best thing is the comparison between the four different illustrated editions of the story to date. I loved the comparison she drew between the illustrations of Schindelman, Jaques, Foreman and Blake. It is fascinating to see these various illustrations side by side and it saves me the trouble of having to purchase first edition copies at exorbitant prices. Admittedly, after looking at the Schindelman drawings, I felt that they did not quite define the characters as well as those done by other illustrators. Not to begrudge those who grew up with Schindelman's version, but it's just that the characters weren't drawn distinctly in his drawings. There are only a couple of small points I would like to highlight. They don't weaken the book per se but it would be helpful to the author if she ever updates the book. It would have been good if Mangan had moved her sections about Roald's schooldays, his Cadbury-tasting sessions and his love of chocolate to the beginning. It would have made for a more effective opening if we readers were introduced to Dahl's personality and his love of chocolate. It feels abrupt to start the story in the middle by describing the evolution of his Charlie manuscript in the years when Dahl wrote the story. Dahl's abiding love of chocolate and the Cadbury boxes are an important influence on the story, and so it would be better to speak of Dahl's school when recounting the origins of the story. It would be a helpful reminder to readers that the origins of the story did not start in 1961, but back in Repton during Dahl's schooldays. Another point I would like to mention is that it would be good if this book had the chance to show us the difference between Dahl's first Oompa-Loompa chapter (in the 1964 Knopf edition with Schindelman's drawings) and the rewritten version we know today. I know that this cut passage is an objectionable passage and I'm not saying it needs to cause trouble or stir up racial tensions. However it would be good to print it for the sake of comparison, so that readers know that this important part needed changing. I admit I would find it more helpful if Mangan had the chance to say a little bit about the sequel, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. It may be weaker than Dahl's other books but it is still part of the history of Charlie. As such it would still be worth a mention in this book.Despite these two small omissions I'm sure that this book will delight many a Dahl fan or a Charlie fan. It has already made me hungry for Wonka chocolate bars. It is an absolute whipple-scrumptious treat to even get your hands on a copy. It is well worth the purchase for any Dahl fan.

If you've ever wanted to know everything there is to know about Roald Dahl's CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, this might be the book for you. Celebrating Charlie's 50th birthday, INSIDE CHARLIE’S CHOCOLATE FACTORY goes deep into the world of Willy Wonka, Oompa Loompas and of course Charlie Bucket. Giving a behind the scenes look at the book, both of the movies, stage shows and pop culture references, this book is packed with trivia and insight into the classic story. It also gives a brief history of the chocolate industry and how Roald came to want to write about it. All with tons of glossy, color photos that'll have you salivating on every page!As a huge fan of Roald Dahl's book, I loved getting to learn more about the world of Willy Wonka. I found the first three sections to be the most interesting. This first section is all about Roald's process and how the book came to exist. It also covered its publication around the world and its reception. The second section was all about the various adaptations of the book, particularly the two movies that were made. The book goes into much more detail with the Gene Wilder version, but it was neat to learn about the process for each movie and how certain things changed from one to the other. There were a lot of things the older movie couldn't do simply because the special effects technology wasn't as advanced as the younger movie. They also had two wildly different interpretations of Willy Wonka himself, with Gene Wilder playing him as joyfully demented and Johnny Depp playing him more childlike. It was cool to read about the directors' different takes on the same source material. The third section compared the illustrations from four editions of the book, showing the drawings from Joseph Schindelman, Faith Jaques, Michael Foreman and of course Quentin Blake. It was cool to see each artist's interpretation of the story, but I definitely felt most attached to the illustrations in my old battered copy from when I was a kid!The last two sections are a little drier, with one about the effect the book had on pop culture, one about the history of chocolate and the last one about the critical reception of the book. But they're worth a read if you're interested in learning a little more about the world beyond the book.INSIDE CHARLIE’S CHOCOLATE FACTORY is definitely a lot of fun if you have a Wonka fan in your life. It's a quick read with plenty of trivia that'll entertain and even surprise you. All in all it's a great companion for the 50-year-old classic!Reviewed by Rebecca Czochor

Fantastic companion to a week in Luxor. Armed with this book, a head lamp, water, food (pack it in every day you go tomb viewing, trust me) you we'll have an experience to rival that with any tour guide. The detailed descriptions let you "read" the paintings result from top to bottom, right to left. An absolutely invaluable resource, I couldn't recommend it more. This book made our vacation. We didn't have to rely on idiotic aggressive guards yelling "scarab!" or "sun!" and who just wanted a baksheesh.

Bought this in the Mummification Museum bookshop in Luxor, April 2012. They had lots of them there. My copy is a thick-covered paperback about 5x10 inches, inch thick, glossy paperback. It's called "the Illustrated Guide to Luxor Tombs Temples and Museums" but the author and ISBN are the same. If you want complete, there's. "Complete Valley of the Kings" etc. But, this book has illustrations and covers almost all the tombs, the ones worth seeing. Every page has at least one full color photo. In the valley of the Kings and other tombs, no photos are allowed. In fact at VoK you must leave your camera at the gate. If you want the color guide to what you saw (and missed!) this is the book. The explanations are clear and concise. Also covers Valley of the Queens and tombs of the nobles. The temples and the Luxor Museum coverage is a bit more sparse, but then the Luxor and Mummification museums themselves are pretty sparse too. The major value to me is the illustration of the tomb decoration. Good book!PS There is also a companion book, same format "The Illustrated Guide to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo", 600+ pages of color illustrations and explanations of (what else) the contents of the museum in Cairo. Also good.
