Modern colleges have Computer Science departments that utilize modern languages but if you're over 40, you probably learned Pascal in college and are comfortable diving straight into Delphi. On the other hand, if you didn't grow up watching Hee Haw and Little House on the Prairie, you probably need to start with the basics.Most online tutorials are VERY outdated and assume you already know some Pascal. Same with most books. Nick Hodges published a great Delphi book in 2014 that covers advanced topics like unit testing, design patterns, and dependency injection but his book will not teach you Delphi.That brings me to this overpriced book. The first thing I noticed was that it was published in 2005 (eye roll). Then I noticed the reviews were good and one was written in 2013. Furthermore, the reviews here showed the book was for beginners. I struggled with my decision because I wasn't sure if it would apply to the current IDE (XE6) and it's very expensive. After reading it, I'm convinced that it helped. The book is accurate and well written. This book targets people with ZERO programming experience. This book teaches basic programming (very basic) using Delphi. I'm an experienced Software Developer with a Computer Science degree (dated 2010 not 1990) and used the book to quickly familiarize myself with the Delphi IDE and language syntax. For some reason, you can't view the table of contents so here it is:CHAPTER 1 Intro to visual programmingCHAPTER 2 Programming with visual componentsCHAPTER 3 String variablesCHAPTER 4 Using numbersCHAPTER 5 Conditional executionCHAPTER 6 Nested and multiple conditionsCHAPTER 7 RepetitionCHAPTER 8 Arrays and indexesCHAPTER 9 Menus and actionsCHAPTER 10 Events and parametersCHAPTER 11 Methods and parametersCHAPTER 12 Procedures and parametersCHAPTER 13 Functions and exceptionsCHAPTER 14 Debugging and testingCHAPTER 15 Intro to database programmingCHAPTER 16 Database programming using data modules and multiple formsCHAPTER 17 Reporting: Using Rave reportsCHAPTER 18 Investigating objects....note there's no VCL/FMX coverage. This is purely an introductory text. By 'introductory' I mean it couldn't be more basic. A 5th grader could learn programming with this book. I don't mean that in a bad way, just be aware. The first two chapters are more about learning the IDE than Delphi. If you're an experienced programmer that's already familiar with the Embarcadero IDE and simply need to learn Delphi, you may want to skip this book and go straight into 'XE2 Foundations' by Chris Rolliston. Unlike this book, 'XE2 Foundations' is an introduction to Delphi that assumes you've seen a computer before. If you do start with this book, XE2 Foundations is a good follow-up.One minor complaint is that this book goes out of its way not to mention memory management. If you told me to write a 550 page introductory programming book without using the word 'memory' a single time I would have said, "impossible!" None of the examples require explicit freeing of memory but the book aims to be an introduction to programming so something as important as memory management should have at least been given a few paragraphs in chapter one.This is the fourth edition and has been reprinted 10 times! The last printing was in 2013. The exercises in the book use Borland's (now Embarcadero) Delphi 7 IDE and show the changes made to Delphi 8. We had to learn Delphi fast because our office started collaborating on a development project written in Delphi. I had never written a single line of Delphi code nor had I ever used a Borland/Embarcadero IDE. The book's diagrams showing the older IDE layout aren't radically different from the current version (currently XE6). If you're using Delphi 7 or later (2002 - 2014), you shouldn't have a problem working through the examples except for Chapter 17 (Reporting). Chapter 17 assumes you have access to RAVE Reports (Delphi 8 installation disk) but XE6 comes with Fast Reports and they are NOT similar. After reading this book, I'm more efficient and productive using Embarcadero's IDE. Experienced programmers will finish the book quickly while becoming familiar with the IDE and basic Delphi syntax. Beginners will learn some programming basics using Delphi.I enjoyed the book but minus one star for being outdated and overpriced.

An objective introduction to Pascal language and Delphi IDE. The tuition, step by step, is very easy to follow and let you learn the basics of this programming software. A have lots of books about Delphi, but this is the only one I found to start learning, for sure. Very well written. After reading this one, you can choose a more advanced one.

I don't write reviews as I rarely have time to formulate a good one. But this book is such a great introduction to the Object Pascal programming language and the Delphi IDE that I felt like I owed it to the writers to leave a review.If you are interested in learning delphi and have never programmed before then this is the book for you!

This is a good book to get started with whether you are familiar with programming on not. I worked my way through the book from the beginning but stopped eventually when I realized I was getting a bit board and needed bigger challenges. I also use it as a reference occasionally.

I am happy regarding the leading time to receive the book, I obtained it within two weeks' time.The carton packaging is okay as the book was in good condition on reception.I will definitely continue to buy books online via amazon.com

Flu season or not, children's ongoing training in hand washing is essential. To reinforce the concept of healthful hygiene, this simple British import amuses older toddlers and preschoolers with cartoon style illustrations and a spirited, straightforward story about Little Princess learning when and why she needs to wash her hands.As a painless reminder for young readers, Little Princess demonstrates the routine. Each time she is told to wash, the curious tot asks why, and each circumstance is briefly explained. After Little Princess plays outside, the Queen intercepts her reach for cake with instructions to wash because she got dirty outside. She cavorts with her dog and cook makes her wash and dry them again. She uses her potty and the King has her wash even though she's ALREADY washed them twice before, Finally, the maid has her wash after she sneezes and, in riotous illustrations, gives her a dramatic overview of dealing with `germs and nasties' to avoid getting ill. Following all the hand washing repetitions, Little Princess gets her cake, and through her example, young readers get the message.

I'm surprised that no one has reviewed this book yet, since Amazon has sold lots and lots of copies ... my guess is that most teachers (like myself) are simply too busy to stop and write reviews :o)I received my copy of this great book in the mail today, and my kinderkids are going to love it! It's the story of a little princess who is constantly being told "Wash your hands!" The princess is playing outside in the mud ("The little princess LOVED getting dirty!") and comes inside to eat a piece of cake. Her mother, the Queen, stops her and says "Wash your hands before you eat that." "Why?" asks the little princess. "Because you've been playing outside."The little princess dutifully washes her hands, then stops to dance with the dog and cat on the way to the kitchen. Next the cook tells her to wash her hands, and of course the little princess asks why. This is repeated several times, with delightful illustrations, to remind the little princess (and all the children who will hear and enjoy this story) that she needs to wash her hands after playing with animals, using her potty, playing outside, and sneezing.A humorous discussion of "germs and nasties" follows, and the little princess learns that if she doesn't wash her hands, the germs and nasties "can get into your food, and then into your tummy ... and then they make you ill."Like Tony Ross' other books ("I Want My Potty" and "I Want to Be"), this one will be a big hit with my students while sharing an important message in a way they'll enjoy and remember.

I'm a nursing student and bought this to teach handwashing to day care and preschool students. Actually, I bought 3 different books and this was the only one "simple" enough for that age group to appreciate. The others went into viruses versus bacteria and were better for much older groups. I've used it 3 times for teaching groups and each time the children are engrossed in the story while at the same time learn about good hygiene. I especially like that it teaches germs are present even if you can't see them - something hard for little ones to get. Even though it centers around a "Princess" who has to wash her hands, the male children were just as interested in the story.

This is one of the best mountaineering expedition books I have read. Ridgeway takes the reader through the intense daily struggles (both mental & physical) required to climb K2, perhaps the hardest of the 8000 meter peaks to climb. In 1978 a large team of Americans, including some of the best US high altitude climbers at that time, have the all consuming goal to be the first from the USA to reach the summit of K2 (which had been climbed only twice before). Their incredible ordeal begins with an arduous approach hike, and continues with increasingly difficult challenges against the weather, altitude, and other deadly hazards. Unfortunately, the team members frequently argued, and struggled to work together effectively. Ridgeway is very candid about this, and does not spare himself criticism. Against all odds, 4 climbers made superhuman efforts to achieve the summit (mostly without supplemental oxygen) by a new route, and somehow survived the descent. Ridgeway's masterful writing made me feel like I was there, and I gained tremendous appreciation for the commitment and skills of the climbers. My only complaint was the lack of diagrams showing the route and camps, but the photos are striking.

Great Book, all of the personal intrigue makes it an engaging read. Had just read Living on the Edge: The Winter Ascent of Kanchenjunga byCherie Bremer-Kamp who was on the trip, and she recommended it. And also having read Roskelly's book about Nanda Devi I felt like I knew many of the characters. And they don't get along. A beautiful route to K2's peak that I had never learned about before. The cover says it all, some of the climbers had to traverse that knife edge ridge 11 times! A big adventure, and I don't think anyone dies, spoiler alert

"The Last Step: The American Ascent of K2" is Rick Ridgeway's extremely well written account of the first successful American ascent (and only third overall ascent at the time) of the world's second highest peak. "The Last Step" is the "expedition account" and includes fascinating commentary from several climbers, making for a more rounded view than most climbing books. "The Last Step" is blessed with a stunning collection of photographs which provide a sense of scale both of the beauty of the Karakoram Mountains and of the incredibly difficult terrain the expedition overcame.Ridgeway's account candidly describes the tensions and acrimony that built up in the expedition as it was repeatedly stalled by poor weather in the fall of 1978. The expedition spent 67 days on the mountain, much of it exposed to the debilitating effects of high altitude. The normally driven and competitive natures of good climbers became points of friction as the expedition faced oncoming winter and the likelihood that few if any of the climbers were going to get a shot at the summit.Ridgeway's narrative of the two successful summit attempts is absolutely hair-raising, as men too long in the "dead zone" above 26,000 feet climbed like near-zombies over dangerously exposed snow slopes. One climber, Jim Wickwire, was forced to bivouac overnight in sub-zero temperatures at 28,000 feet after zoning out and lingering too long at the summit.The account makes clear that only the most fit, capable, and single-minded climbers had any chance of topping out on K2 under the conditions faced in 1978. Those climbers with lesser skills or with distractions such as homesickness or as in one case, an affair with another member of the team, were unable or unwilling to risk all for the summit.This book is most highly recommended to fans of the climbing account genre. Although a long read at over 300 pages, others may find it of interest as an indepth look at what happens on world-class climbing expeditions.

Without a doubt, this is one of the most riveting mountaineering books around. Not for the climbing, which is in and of itself gripping, but for the slice of human drama found in the deterioration of relationships amongst various members of the expedition. At times, one is mesmerized by the bad behavior displayed at such high altitudes! One would think that these expeditioners were on Melrose Place, rather than fighting for their place in mountaineering history on K2, one of the most perilous mountains in the world to ascend.Central to all the squabbling, was the love trangle which developed on the expedition, which was perceived by some of the expeditioners to be an extra marital affair in progress. Though this later proved to be true, at the time it was the source of much denial and hard feelings. It further split the team, which was already divided over who would be chosen to summit, and eroded already existing friendships, while preventing new ones which might have otherwise developed.On top of all this, add in poor weather which caused them to spend about sixty seven days on the mountain, mostly at altitudes over eighteen thousand feet, and you have a recipe for disaster. These expeditioners, however, managed to become the first Americans to ascend K2.Their success in achieving their objective, despite the trials and tribulations which they endured, is testament to their fortitude in putting aside petty, mean spirited concerns and inter-personal conflicts. This painstaking account of the first time summit of K2 by Americans is a must read for all climbing enthusiasts and readers of this genre.
