An excellent book (at 25,000 words, I consider it a little long to be referred to as an essay) about a problem that I can relate to because of similar experiences in my day job as an engineer. I'll be recommending it to my MPs. As a result of reading this booklet, I will now be exploring the other "Quarterly Essays".

This article provides good insights into why Australians are the way they are and why they expect so much from their governments. The reach back to the early days of settlement explains a lot.

Enjoyable read, especially interesting on the origins of Australian parliaments and the historical distrust and/or contempt for the political class. A must read for Australian politics enthusiasts.

A very astute journalist who puts her case clearly and succinctly!

Tingle offers a brief overview of our political history and a neat summary of contemporary politics. Well worth the (short) reading time.

I must emphasize that I have not read the Kindle version of this essay, only the hard copy, but it is exceptional to the point that it deserves comment.The eponymous "great expectations" of an "angry nation" are identified but Tingle does not dwell upon them. Many Australians already get it - they are irked at a growing focus on personal wealth and comfort, accompanied by a snarling intolerance of social diversity. This `dumbing down' is best exemplified by the pursuit of smaller government and lower taxation on the one hand, and an expectation that government will resolve all societal ills, including the funding of age retirement, on the other. Tingle examines the nature of Australian governments back to the first fleet, casting into relief their balance between leadership and citizen autonomy, between long term policy and electoral reactivity, and between themselves and their predecessors. This analysis, compressed into 60 odd pages, is as good as it gets. Tingle draws well from the literature and her grasp of Australian history is refreshingly to the point.Tingle is even-handed in her critique. Brevity may have inclined her to don Do Bono's black hat to the point that the some leaders' achievements beyond the economy are barely touched on, such as inspired indigenous reforms or more enlightened understandings of Australia's place in the world, but balance is retained. At the beginning, she frames her question around a personal visit to a well-known retired politician, one whose reputation has mellowed since politics and with whom Tingle claims a degree of empathy. While this visit frames the question of `expectations', perhaps it is the softener before the killer punch her analysis delivers.

Mark Kurlansky: As a Dominican growing up around Haitians and next door to Haiti what was your impression of Haiti and Haitians and what surprised you when you went there? Actually, there weren't many Haitians around when I was growing up in the 50s, under the dictatorship of Trujillo. The border had been closed since the massacre of 1937, when Haitians living on the Dominican side were killed by the military (from 4,000 to 40,000--the figures vary wildly). I knew only one Haitian, Chucha, who was the nanny over at my cousins' house. The story was that during the massacre, Chucha had walked all the way from the southwest border to the capital and knocked at my great aunt's door, asking for asylum. My great aunt took her in. Chucha stayed for the rest of her life. When she was in a good mood, Chucha told incredible stories. So, that was my impression of our neighbor country: a place of cranky people who could tell the best stories. What I absorbed from the culture was that Haiti was the benighted country next door, where Vodou was the religion, instead of our enlightened Christianity. Haitians were the "real blacks," whereas black Dominicans were "indios oscuros" (dark Indians). Haiti was the enemy who had invaded us and occupied our country for twenty-two years. (Interestingly, Dominicans celebrate their independence, not from their colonizer Spain, but from Haiti.) At night, when I didn't want to go to sleep, I'd be threatened with the Haitian cuco (boogeyman) who was going to come take me away to Haiti. Of course, this threat only served to pique my interest! Given that I was curious about Haiti, I'm surprised that I didn't make more of an effort to go "next door" when I returned often to the D.R. All the red tape required to cross the border discouraged me, but I think there was also a subliminal fear and shame based on the 1937 massacre, never fully acknowledged by my country. I assumed that as someone of Dominican heritage and white, I would be unwelcomed, until I was invited by Piti to attend his wedding. What surprised me were the many similarities between Haiti and the D.R.--despite our different histories, languages, cultures. Haitians were making casave, a staple of the Dominican diet as well. Their beer, Prestige, tasted like our beer, Presidente. (Even the names had a similar ego-boosting feel to them!) The sayings, which are the way popular wisdom gets passed down in our oral cultures, were often the same ones in Kreyòl as in Spanish. These might seem superficial things, but they signaled a deep connection between our two countries. I was impressed by how much more resourceful the Haitians were. As a poorer country, they don't waste anything. The culture, especially out in the countryside, is less "corrupted" by Americanized and globalized influences. No McDonalds or Kentucky Fried Chickens, no ads for Coke, though we did see a big truck with OBAMA painted on the side of the trailer. Read the rest of the interview

I love Julia Alvarez. I doubt we have the same political leanings and I know we aren't the same religion or socio-economic bracket. To be honest, we might not get along if we met. But I love her books. She's got the kind of clear writing voice that aspiring authors dream of and she lives life as an adventure, which I greatly admire. She also knows which stories to tell and to my knowledge has never written a bad book. This book was also great. To people comparing her to Gabriel Garcia Marquez, this is a personal travel narrative, it isn't meant to be poignant literature. Just because both authors often write about South and Central America doesn't mean they write in the same genre or for the same audience.That being said, this is her story about several trips to Haiti with a family friend. It reads as honest, compelling and gives a depiction of day to day life in a country that has a lot of poor or inaccurate information being released about it. If you like Alvarez, you'll like this book. If you're curious about Haiti, you'll like this book. I'd highly recommend it.

Alvarez never fails to keep the reader's attention. Thinking this book historical fiction like many of her previous writings, I was delighted to find this a record of wonderful family support and intensity. The reports on post earthquake Port-au-Prince were intriguing. Alvarez raises a very important issue at the end: will all the outside NGO assistance really change Haiti's plight or will international political power continue to ignore the underlying causes of Haiti's poverty and culture. Alvarez remains my 21st century favorite female author. A must read for lovers of cultural insights, realistic human interaction, and current day political intracies.

A no nonsense storytelling with a Birdseye view of the hardships and adversity the Haitian people faced and continue to face in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake. Her style of writing just flows so easily. What’s sad though is learning how corrupt both Haiti & the Dominican Republic are.

Quick read without a lasting impression. I try to read all things "Haitian." This was not worth the money spent.The author clearly is skilled but the content of this book is negligible. A better title might have been "Two weekend trips into Haiti."

I actually give this book 4 1/2 stars as I liked it a lot. I liked it because it flowed beautifully. It is easy to connect with Julia Alvaraz and the people she shares her visits to Haiti with. The story is really interesting and so informative. I feel like I could really picture where they were. Ms Alvaraz clearly is devoted to the people of both the Dominican Republic and Haiti. She is empathetic but not condescending. She is actually quite humble. I highly recommend this story. It is both "feel good" and inspiring.

A couple of things for the reader to bear in mind. When I first went to the DR as a 1st tour Foreign Service Officer back in 1978, the Haiti/Dominican border used to be one of the few political borders visible from space because of massive deforestation on the Haitian side and less people/adequate controls on the Dominican side. Back then the only Haitians you would find in the DR were the Haitians cutting the sugar cane. Coffee farmers used dominicans to harvest coffee and manage their farms - not haitians such as Julia Alvarez does today. Haitians now completely dominate all aspects of the Dominican low salary labor market and their encroachment into the DR along the border has eliminated the visible border difference from space - just look at GoogleEarth. However the cultures remain quite different and travel by Dominicans into Haiti remains quite limited, especially across the Northern border crossing. This is why Ms. Alvarez's travelogue and her observations are so special, such as the mango ladies near her destination in Haiti. She really brings it to life. I did the same trip back in 1998 from Dajabon to Cape Haitien when I was only allowed to pass because my car had diplomatic license plates. The only other vehicle allowed to pass was a daily truck filled with Dominican ice that went to Cape Haitien.

As expected, recipient was happy

This is a first-person story of the author and her husband's experiences owning a free trade coffee farm in Haiti. It is a simple tale of average people, Haitian, Dominican and American, who try to support one another in a complex world.

Regular readers of Billy Collins’ poetry will recognize his usual subjects in his new book of poems THE RAIN IN PORTUGAL (the phrase shows up in the poem “On Rhyme,” which is not my favorite poem): cats, dogs, a breakfast meal, distant cities, travel, nature, other poets (Donald Hall, W. H. Auden, Cavafy, Shakespeare et al). And as we have come to expect, he writes with gentle humor. (“A Note to J. Alfred Prufrock” is one example of many.) A poem that begins as whimsical, however, sometimes may turn serious and surprise you. Practically every poem in this collection is the kind that Garrison Keillor would choose to read for his daily “The Reader’s Almanac” on NPR.Mr. Collins said in an interview some years ago that the subject of most poems is death. Three of my favorite poems here have to do with the subject. In “December lst” he remembers his mother who, if she were alive, would be 114: “Today is my mother’s birthday,/but she’s not here to celebrate/by opening a flowery card/or looking calmly out a window.” (Has there ever been a mother on earth who did not love those Hallmark cards that we always sent them I ask.) The poem “Portrait goes to the bone. The narrator of the poem observes a woman with a ponytail disappear in a crowd:Now neither of uswas either here nor thereand would fail to make our mark on the history of civilization.And that reminded me of the dayI stood in a museumbefore a somber paintingthen bent close to readthe little printed cardthat told me it was a portraitof an anonymous Dutch familyby an anonymous Dutch painterMy favorite poem—at least for today as I might change my mind tomorrow—is the poem “Helium.”Imagining what the weather will be likeon the day following your deathhas a place on that list of thingsthat distinguish us from animals as if walking around on two legslaughing to ourselves were not enough to close the case.In these forecasts, it’s usually raining,The way it would be in the movies,But it could be sparkling clearOr grey and still with snow expected in the afternoon.Much will continue to occur after I dieseems to be the message here.The rose will nod its red or yellow head.Sunbeams will break into the gloomy woods.And that’s what was on my mindas I drove through a gauntlet of signson a road that passed through a small town in Ohio:Bob’s Transmissions,The Hairport, the Bountiful Buffet,Reggie’s Bike Shop, Balloon Designs by Pauline,and Majestic China Garden to name a few.When I realized that all these placescould still be in business on the day after I die,I vowed to drink more water,to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables,and to start going to the gym I never go toif only to outliveBalloon Designs by Paulineand maybe even Pauline herselfthough it would be enough if she simplylost the business and left town for good.Finally, in what must be a first for subject matter, Mr. Collins has written a poem “Under the Stars” about urinating while looking at the moon (he uses a word that I cannot write here for the act.) In the same interview referred to above, Mr. Collins, who as I recall was commenting on a new biography of Emily Dickinson with some new twist, stated that we should simply read Miss Dickinson’s poetry for the sheer beauty of it rather than analyze it to death. The same can be said for his own poetry.

Billy Collins is his usual, offhand self here, but the effort appears mailed in. It's like he decided that not only may we reject formalism, but also any pretense to quality. A thin submission.That said, his elegiac homage to a male piss was brilliant (if also aware of its audience):It’s very peaceful pissing under the stars or beneath the mild colors of twilight, so refreshing to take a deep breath outdoors then exhale all the woes of the day and even the longer woes and thorns of the year. Billy Collins touches my heart, makes me smile and...occasionally, wonderfully...makes me laugh out loud. He puts Prufrock...and Adam and Eve...in accessible places. For that alone I will love him forever. This collection speaks of aging in comforting ways. Bliss.

Beautiful poems, as always, from Collins. If you have enjoyed his previous works, then I have no doubt you will enjoy the verses in this volume. This is not to say if you are new to Collins that this collection is inaccessible at all. What I like about Collins is that I can use many of his poems with students of a wide variety of ages and they engage with and understand his work. He is even anthologized in some textbooks I have used. A great read for the lover of literature, and a great resource for teachers.

Nobody is more surprised than I am that I love poetry. I didn't in my early years, I didn't have the patience for it. But hearing T. S. Eliot's "The Wasteland" read aloud was an epiphany for me, not so much, "Oh now I get it." as "Oh yeah, that's what it's all about..." (It's a poem I've read a hundred times, once or twice a year, mining new meanings, new ideas.)I love many poets and their poems, none unreservedly, but in the same way I love my friends. I see their flaws and it makes them the dearer to me for those flaws. So when I see people slagging Billy Collins as middlebrow, I have to scratch my head because I don't know what highbrow poetry is supposed to be. For me it's all of a piece, and poetry is poetry. Like porn you know it when you see it.Collins is a relatively accessible poet, and perhaps that's why some people don't consider him cerebral enough. I'm not sure that's a worthy measure, though. Consider Cocteau's definition of poetry: "Such is the role of poetry. It unveils, in the strict sense of the word. It lays bare, under a light which shakes off torpor, the surprising things which surround us and which our senses record mechanically." and you'll see that Collins' work fits that definition admirably. Often while reading one of his poems, I'll feel a little impatience and think, "What is he on about?" And then I'll reach the end and find myself smiling and nodding. "Oh yeah, that's what it's all about." He's made me laugh or nod in recognition of universal experiences on any number of occasions.One of the things I like about this particular volume is that many of the poems are replies to other artists and their work. There's the delightfully humanizing portrait of Shakespeare experiencing air travel, listening to Miles Davis and needing reassurance when the jet flies into a thunderstorm. There's an upbeat comparison of two paintings of Icarus, and the poem by Auden which was inspired by one of them analyzed within Collins' poem, inspired by the other. And there's a very funny response to Eliot's Prufrock and his dithering: "What is your *problem* man?"So no, I don't find anything wrong with being accessible. I've read David Jones, I get inaccessible, and it's not intrinsically better, just different. If you think you don't like poetry, try Billy Collins. And if you know you do, then revel in his moments of insight, or his goofiness.

I left South Africa 30 years ago, This book brought back all the wonderful memories I have of this beautiful country. This book is a must for anyone wanting to learn about, or travel in South Africa. It is written in a fun and interesting way. I love the interactive activities in the book and how you can keep track of your vacation there. It is very informative, tells you the history of the country and the current events. Thank you Robert and Mary Mattner for coming up with this interesting travel guide and lovely photos.

I do a lot of travelling, and feel at times travel books fail to capture my attention. This Book however did that and more. Not only is it infromative, it was fun to have. The section where you can collect contacts and emails of people you meet on your advetures is such usefull tool,and helps me keep from loosing contact of the interesting and wonderfully people i have meet on my journey. I also like the useful hints blogs on the pages. The aurther Robert hit it on the head with this book, giving you loads of information and useful ways to see South Africa. I cant wait to use it on the Mozambique leg of my trip.There is are sections where you can insert pictures and write journal entries about what you experienced on certain days, a true journal format and a great way to keep your trip memories fresh in you mind.I would recommend this book to anyone travelling to SA and it is written by a ventran of the tourist industry in SA so you know you are getting good inside inforamtion.

Robert Mattner has succeeded in introducing the reader to South Africa in a clear,concise way, from his Cities at a Glance pages to the South African time line. The maps are great in helping the traveler see where one is in relation to the rest of the country. If you have never been to South Africa, this is a must have traveling companion before and during your trip. It is incredible how many facts and details are at the readers' fingertips.I had the pleasure of being on a tour of South Africa where Robert Mattner was the guide. He made the trip interesting and informative to everyone--including our 14-year old granddaughter. He was open to arranging additional side trips where there was interest and he considered each traveler's interests and needs. This book helped me recall the trip and the many points of interest and experiences that were no longer fresh in my own mind,Although I returned with a great deal of information, I would have trouble finding all of the bits and pieces today. With the pictures, diary entries and friendship list all in one place, this organizational dilemma will be solved for future South African travelers.
