I feel inspired to write this review after reading five other lojong training manuals, including Jamgon Kongtrul's classic work. In my opinion, they are all good, but Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche's is the best for both thoroughness as well as the directness of writing style. Other lojong manuals either do not cover all of the slogans or take an approach which is overly abstract. The "Traning of the Mind" strikes the right balance between being scholarly and relating to the real world at the same time. I practice with lojong slogans in my daily life and have found them to be invaluable in dealing with many real world situations. Within this context, I find myself always going home to Trungpa Rinpoche and gaining new insight with each reading. I could not more highly recommend this book.

Trungpa Rinpoche is always lucid and to the point. In this book he explains the "tong-len" practice, which was once given onlyprivately to advanced disciples. Even Trungpa Rinpoche himself originally adhered to that tradition, presumably because the practicecould be dangerous to those who don't know what they're doing. Therefore: if you practice tong-len from this book, be careful. The point of the practice is to relieve the suffering of others by taking it on oneself. Be sure you are willing to do that before you start.

Of all the books I've read on Buddhist practice, this is the one that I come back to over and over again. Its directness, precision, clarity and immediate usefulness is stunning, profound and impactful. Reading this book for me was like getting kicked in the face, in terms of its powerful call to wake up and just DO what is being suggested, stop playing around with philosophies and start growing up. You don't even have to be a Buddhist in order to do this stuff, because there is no doctrine whatsoever.I somewhat paraphrase the author's own introduction when I say from my own heart, that this book profoundly affected my own understanding of Buddhism, in a way that other texts have not. You find that you can just DO IT and it works. The core teachings here have no frills. No pop psychology, no touchy-feely, bare bones. No esoteric language, no beating around the bush, no stroking your ego. Just straight in to *what you can do right now to train your mind and cultivate loving kindness*.There are some terms that require explanations which are given quite well by Trungpa. Furthermore, this book may not be accessible to somebody with no prior exposure to Buddhism at all. Those individuals may benefit from beginning with some books by the author of the foreword here, who herself was a student of Trungpa, and who incorporates these teachings in all of her many books, each of which is simultaneously accessible to all while being invaluable to even long-time practitioners. In summary, I am VERY grateful that this text exists, and for the expert commentary provided by Trungpa. The first reading changed my life, and I am never disappointed when I return to the book for further study. I honestly don't think that in this lifetime I will ever come to a point where it is less than exquisitely useful.

This is a must have for anyone interested in the study of Buddhism and the Lojong slogans. If you study only this, you get the gist of the whole Tibetan Buddhist path. Broken down into parts and discussion of each slogan. I found this useful along with other teachings on the subject. However, if you're just starting to study Tibetan Buddhist philososphy, I would suggest Mingyur Rinpoche's "Joy of Living", anything by Pema Chodron, Tsoknyi Rinpoche's "Open Heart, Open Mind".

Concise (brief) and clear teachings with an emphasis on the proper development of attitude, compassion and mindfulness. These concepts, and others, are the necessary rationale for training the mind. This text also explains the two disciplines of Mahayana & Hinayana ("taming the Mind"). I'm relatively new to the study of Buddhism (5 years) and I found this text very helpful in understanding the concepts and practice.

Very practical and accessible information in this book. For anyone wanting an easy guide to cultivating compassion, this is definitely the book to get. There are gems in it that will please even the advanced student of Buddhism. Very well organized.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to understand the fifty-nine slogans of Atisha for their Tonglen practice. Chogyam Trungpa explains each slogan completely and comprehensively. You will understand each one immediately and wonder why it was so difficult to learn from other teachers. Read the book slowly, no need to hurry and the teachings will stay with you. Chogyam Trungpa's teachings are down to earth and you will find yourself smiling at his humor.

A great book for westerners. Deeper insight to the Lojong slogan practice and pairs well with Pema Chödrön’s Compassion cards

I am a little disappointed with this book as the patterns are very similar to another book I have of the authors. Having said that there are some patterns I will definitely be using once I complete my current WIP

In my continuing desire to learn all things beading I purchased this book. I was surprised that there are No instructions for the stitches, it is solely a book of projects. You Must already know how to do tatting, and you Must already know the "shorthand" that is used to describe how to do projects. I first thought, "oh my bad, I didn't look at the description of the book closely enough"... but yes I did, it said clear, well illustrated with photos. So I assumed, and I do not think it was a stupid assumption, that the book would have all I need to do the projects. It does not. Ok, so I will spend a lot of time on You Tube to learn how to do tatting, and learn about the shorthand and terms that is used to speak about it. So, that is why I only gave it 3 stars. As for the projects and instructions on the projects...looks good except it is still like a foreign language to me and I haven't started even one yet. Never the less, I shall endure and conquer this craft and do a few projects! Just need a lot more You Tube time, and may get another book. (yes, I do wish they had made this clear. I have Tons of bead books, and they have the basics in each OR a clear description that the book doesn't have the basics.)

As another reviewer points out, this book contains no instructions for tatting. Let me go one step further and add that it contains no instructions for working with beads in tatting, either, or for working with findings. I was disappointed to find no techniques or tips for turning tatting into jewelry, nor any resources for learning such techniques.I was doubly disappointed when, in making a necklace from the book, I began to see how very similar the motifs and the projects themselves are. My necklace turned out well, so I can't say I am sorry to have bought the book, but it did not meet my expectations.

Clear and easy to follow - and the best thing is I won't see anyone coming at me wearing the same thing. I take great pride in being away from fads. Handmade - this is as good as it gets. Thank you

A lot of the patterns seem to repeat themselves here. Still a nice book.

Fun ideas for earrings, pendants, necklaces & bracelets. I will make many.

Great if you already know what your doing.

Good reference for the lace maker

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Why doesn’t every corporate leader actively listen to employees and to veteran consultants like Gostick and Elton (authors of the Carrot Principle books)? Though the answer to that question isn’t the subject of this book, adopting the how-to’s for realizing dreams could indeed provide the solution to staid, stagnant, and unrewarding work in America. As with most human resources type of business books, the authors present ideas in a many-stepped process, with principles to follow, often too many to remember. Yet if readers and executives just stick to their rule of three (wow, no surprises, and cheer), the rewards of an engaged workforce will probably ensue. Examples of great teams, believe it or not, proliferate here; in addition to the well-known cultures of a Zappos, for instance, there are also stories from Medical City Dallas Hospital, Pepsi Bottling Group, the Blue Angels, and Nash Finch, all about the power of teams to transform. And lest you think that the authors simply collected anecdotes, their philosophy is based on valid and overwhelming statistics, thanks to the Best Places to Work database (350,000 employees from 28 industries): 63 percent of workers surveyed found productivity to be positively affected when coworkers are friends outside of work (to cite just one finding). Take a letter to the C-suite: it’s all about work that matters. --Barbara Jacobs

I love this book, so much so that I purchased it for every member of my team and my boss. I can't say enough positive things.First, the book is highly readable. It's not full of mumbo-jumbo, psycho-babble or cute catch phrases. It's quite simply a practical guide based on thorough research. Its written in an everyday voice, very much like I were reading a novel, that I find interesting. It's not pretentious, condescending or overbearing.Second, the book gives practical examples of what does and what doesn't work. They name names of those that DO work. They don't name names of those that don't work, which I do like. They also remain very professional about the criticism. It's not about making the team looking bad. It's teaching a lesson so other people on other teams don't make the same mistakes.I have found that I now think differently in the team environment. I approach problems regarding issues and complexities differently. And, I know that my team members do too. I can see the difference. It's exciting and profound for my team. We're taking a product that everyone is required to use, but also hates, and we're changing attitudes because of our attitude and our new way of operating - a direct result of the information in this book.If you're interested in improving your team and you're interested in approaching it in a different way, I think you'll find value in this book.

I loved this book! I think what made it especially good was I read it with my fabulous team and it cemented with research (350,000 people) what I have always believed - that success comes mainly from teams. It summed up a and put into words a number of leadership ideas that I've had in my mind for years, but never fully articulated, that it is important to hvae the team focused on a common cause and purpose, that it is a collaborative effort where the team recognizes each other and holds each other accountable and the importance of truly bringing the team together and cultivating an environment of trust and responsibility.I believe one of the fundamental keys to a leaders success is that everyone on their team is engaged and that without a fully engaged team success or at least world class success will be non-existent (or at least fleeting). The team needs to be passionate about what they do and passionate about their mission. For my team that is empowering managers to lead and take responsibility for their own teams - their development, their performance and their success. It is also about helping managers drive engagement on their teams. It is something my entire team is passionate about and I think made it especially wonderful to read this book together as a team.In this book, Chester and Adrian take what they've culled from thousands and thousands of survey's and the condense it into some simple principles and nuggets of wisdom. They made this easily readable by adding in stories of many teams.A year ago when I joined this team someone asked what I would do if things didn't change and I said that for starters, my philosophy was that as an associate working for a company that you weren't happy with you had three options - accept things the way they are, change things or leave. I told her that I would give it a full year and I believed the only answer was to change things. It's now been a year and we are well on our way to becoming a team that will literally transform the entire organization. Our little team of less then twenty has direct influence over thirteen thousand associates and approximately 300 managers. While The ORANGE Revolution didn't really tell us anything we didn't know, it did help focus us and each chapter led us into wonderful areas of discussion and reflection (we read a chapter each week and talked about it for 30 minutes).I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who works on a team - it doesn't matter if it is a work team, a sports team, a volunteer team or a community or church team - this book will give you great tips for taking your team to the next level.

By far, with no question, this book is the most impactful business read I have encountered in 20 years of working in corporate America. It has fundementally changed my complete approach to manageing people and developing a winning culture. Everyone I know who has read it feels exactly the same.

The book gave some great insight on building momentum within teams! GREAT read. You will leave with some power ideas on how to bring your team together.

If you're ready to motivate and inspire your team to greatness this work will guide you and provide the impetus you've been looking for! I suggest getting the Carrot a Day as well for suggestions on projects to build the team spirit you have in mind.

Love the principles espoused by Adrian and Chester. Wish they hadn't sold out to O.C. Tanner.

WOW is so very powerful! This small effort will make a tremendous difference in team and personal life. Keep the positive re-inforcement in the forefront of your team and all the members.

I was dreading reading this for work, but once I started reading the book it was full of so much useful information.

Review

"The simplicity of the four-color conjecture is deceptive. Just how deceptive is made clear by Robin Wilson's delightful history of the quest to resolve it. . . . Four Colors Suffice is strewn with good anecdotes, and the author . . . proves himself skillful at making the mathematics accessible."---Jim Holt, New York Review of Books"Wilson's lucid history weaves together lively anecdotes, biographical sketches, and a non-technical account of the mathematics." (Science)"Earlier books . . . relate some of the relevant history in their introductions, but they are primarily technical. In contrast, Four Colors Suffice is a blend of history anecdotes and mathematics. Mathematical arguments are presented in a clear, colloquial style, which flows gracefully."---Daniel S. Silver, American Scientist"Robin Wilson appeals to the mathematical novice with an unassuming lucidity. It's thrilling to see great mathematicians fall for seductively simple proofs, then stumble on equally simple counter-examples. Or swallow their pride."---Jascha Hoffman, The Boston Globe"A thoroughly accessible history of attempts to prove the four-color theorem. Wilson defines the problem and explains some of the methods used by those trying to solve it. His descriptions of the contributions made by dozens of dedicated, and often eccentric, mathematicians give a fascinating insight into how mathematics moves forward, and how approaches have changed over the past 50 years. . . . It's comforting to know that however indispensable computers become, there will always be a place for the delightfully eccentric mathematical mind. Let's hope that Robin Wilson continues to write about them."---Elizabeth Sourbut, New Scientist"An attractive and well-written account of the solution of the Four Color Problem. . . . It tells in simple terms an exciting story. It . . . give[s] the reader a view into the world of mathematicians, their ideas and methods, discussions, competitions, and ways of collaboration. As such it is warmly recommended."---Bjarne Toft, Notices of the American Mathematical Society"Recreational mathematicians will find Wilson's history of the conjecture an approachable mix of its technical and human aspects. . . . Wilson explains all with exemplary clarity and an accent on the eccentricities of the characters." (Booklist)"Wilson gives a clear account of the proof . . . enlivened by historical tales."---Alastair Rae, Physics World"Wilson provides a lively narrative and good, easy-to-read arguments showing not only some of the victories but the defeats as well. . . . Even those with only a mild interest in coloring problems or graphs or topology will have fun reading this book. . . . [It is] entertaining, erudite and loaded with anecdotes."---G.L. Alexanderson, MAA Online"I loved Robin Wilson's book on the four color problem, because it gives the history as well as the arguments. The history is presented so entertainingly, and the arguments so lucidly, that I'm sure the book will find a large audience, and delight any audience as much as it did me."--John Conway

Great book.

I'm no fan of history, normally, but Wilson has done what so vanishingly few others ever have: he actually makes it interesting. He first defines the Four Color Conjecture, as it was known for over a century. Start with a map drawn on a plane. The conjecture says that it takes just four colors to fill it in, such that regions with shared boundaries are different colors. A kindergartener can understand it, and maybe eve have a bit of fun trying to come up with such colorings for simple maps. Rigorous mathematical proof of the statement took over 125 years, though - and then, the proof called into question just what a mathematical proof really is.The final answer didn't come in an "Aha!" flash, with some mathematical loner suddenly grabbing his chalk arcane symbols on a blackboard. Wilson brings to life the gradual, cumulative process of developing proof techniques. The bounds changed, too: a proof that no more than five colors would be needed, then successive proofs increasing the number of regions in four-colorable maps. The step from five to four colors, however, is just as big as the step from any finite number of regions to maps of infinite complexity. Then, in the 1970s, Appel and Haken cracked it: Four Colors Suffice. The famous problem had fallen - or had it? Their proof was long, though not the longest on record, so any claim of proof should wait for independent review - errors can creep into any human construction, after all. But it also involved hundreds of hiours of supercomputer time, checking over a thousand special cases. I remember, at the time, some people complaining that using a program without proving the program's correctness is no proof at all - not necessarily true, if each result can be hand-checked. (Later versions of the proof did formally verify the programs used.) Then, to be a proof at all, some felt that it should be possible for a person to grasp. Something that vast certainly lacked concise elegance, which Appel and Haken freely admitted. But, if it was too big for any one mind to encompass, to whom was anything really proven? (The "classification theorem," a decade later, had over a hundred contributors and ran to tens of thousands of pages in total - four-coloring might have been the first monster proof, but certainly not the last.)I felt real excitement toward the end of the book. Wilson skilfully wove the historical strands together, showing how each advance built on earlier ones. He never swamped the reader under mathematical tedium, but still conveyed the tension of competition and thrill of discovery. Maybe it sounds like old news today but all the original drama is still there, laid out for non-mathematicians to appreciate.-- wiredweird
