Review

**Gold** Winner of the Nautilus Book Award  "This heartfelt book should be on a list of the best uplifting true stories; readers looking for inspiring narrative nonfiction or insight into life in other countries and cultures will thoroughly enjoy."—Shelf Awareness “ ‘Compassion fatigue.’ It’s a term that gets used when (mostly) Westerners declare that they just can’t spare one more ounce of compassion for those who are suffering. Given the self-inflicted wound that many American voters thrust on this nation, and the consequent series of nearly daily bad news reports, it wouldn’t be surprising to hear that compassion fatigue is spreading…So, for those who need a reminder that one person can make a difference, let me introduce you to Gladys Kalibbala, the subject of Jessica Yu’s new book, Garden of the Lost and Abandoned…Garden of the Lost and Abandoned is a joyful book… [and] Gladys Kalibbala is a force of righteousness, often supporting children out of her own meager pocket…Gladys Kalibbala is proof that there are still individuals who are making immeasurable differences in a broken world.”—Signature Reads "Gladys is a larger than life personality, and Yu brings all her best sensibilities as a filmmaker and documentarian to bring every corner of this woman’s world to light. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll get angry, but you’ll never lose hope while reading this book."—Writer's Bone “[Yu] makes her literary debut with the stunning account of Gladys Kalibbala, who has devoted herself to rescuing lost children in Uganda…The author delivers a moving collection of cases that have confronted Kalibbala…all of [which] have an immediacy because Yu has included generous amounts of dialogue and local color, all indicating the author's observational skills and attention to details…Kalibbala emerges as a magnetic personality with a huge heart and boundless spirit…An eloquent affirmation of the vast capacity of the human heart.” –Kirkus Reviews   "Yu focuses on the personal narratives of Kalibbala and the children, enriching her account with vivid details and extensive dialogue. This tight focus leads to a compelling, page-turning read…Yu’s evenhanded narrative reveals the balance between bighearted Kalibbala’s struggles with a sometimes-uncaring system and the support the children receive from police and her own triumphs. This is a powerful and inspiring tale of how one woman can make a tremendous difference in her community.”—Booklist “This compassionate portrait of Gladys Kalibbala…[is] heart-wrenching…Kalibbala emerges as a generous soul and fierce advocate…[Yu’s] deeply researched personal journalism…[and] intense close-up on her charismatic heroine results in an inspirational narrative.” –Publishers Weekly   “This beautiful, unforgettable story will break your heart and then leave you awed by the human capacity for kindness.”—Imbolo Mbue, author of Behold the Dreamers (Oprah’s Book Club)    "Jessica Yu’s compelling writing and her filmmaker’s eye paint a vivid picture of urban Kampala and allow us to walk in Gladys’s shoes, to celebrate her every minor victory and to mourn with her when she loses. Garden of the Lost and Abandoned renews my faith in humanity."—Abraham Verghese, author of Cutting for Stone    "Why should we care about the children of strangers? That’s the question that Gladys Kalibbala answers so movingly in Jessica Yu’s warm and uplifting portrait. As Yu chronicles Kalibbala’s mission to save the abandoned children of Kampala, she reminds us that it’s possible to make the world a better place one child at a time."—Paul Tough, author of How Children Succeed   "Can sheer goodness matter, let alone be thrilling to contemplate? Well, in Yu’s brimming account of her protagonist Gladys’s glorious example, we get to watch as a garden of the lost and the abandoned opens out inexorably (and yes, thrillingly) into a home for the found and the redeemed.” —Lawrence Weschler, author of Mr. Wilson's Cabinet of Wonder

A beautifully written, thought-provoking look at an extraordinary person. Gladys is a journalist in Kampala, Uganda, who writes a column for the local paper identifying children who are lost or abandoned, in the hope that someone will claim them and either bring them back home or give them a new home. But Gladys is more than a reporter - she becomes deeply involved in the lives of those she tries to help, seeking out parents and finding homes for those whose parents do not come forward. There are failures, but there are successes as well, and the stories of the children profiled by Jessica Yu in this fine book come alive, delight, and haunt the reader long after the book is finished.

“‘Does it give you very much pain?’ The woman’s fingers moved over the stretch of his cheek, feeling the drumhead tightness of his skin. It was the first time anyone had touched his face in over ten years.” Each lost child’s journey unfolds like a mystery with Gladys, a reporter by trade, tracking down information and uncovering difficult circumstances. Gladys is a wonder with persistence, practicality, and kindness. There are heart-breaking situations, but also joy when Gladys is able to connect children to family and shelter. I was completely absorbed with finely detailed descriptions and conversations -- the book gives such a vivid portrait of Gladys and her journeys. There are great passages describing Gladys and her driver Mike’s banter and humor in their quests and long drives through the villages outside of Kampala. Beautifully written, a inspiring and transporting read.

This was such a good book and I have nothing but respect for Gladys Kalibbala. Respect. I don't know how she does it but she does. I spent a short time in Uganda working with children and to say the need is great is an understatement. Jessica Yu did a fine job writing this book. If someone wants to know about the forgotten and neglected children of Uganda (and all over the world really) read this book. It's a universal problem and not just Uganda.

Reading

This was just an ok book.

Gladys Kalibbala is an amazing Ugandan woman. When she heard that there was an opening in a local newspaper, she applied despite the lack of an academic training that her younger competitors had. Instead she pointed out her insatiable curiosity and ability to get people to confide in her. Her new boss was also an older woman who pointed out that degrees do not make a reporter and hired her.Gladys was soon struck by the large number of abandoned and orphaned childlren in Uganda, many separated from parents by the war. She started writing profiles of the children, first to reunite those who had separated parents, and finally for those who needed to be adopted. When that failed to suffice, she started taking in the children on her own.Gladys Kalibbala insists that she is an ordinary person, not a saint lest anyone else think they couldn't do the same. She has no charity backing her, no NGO, and recently she started a farm, without experience in farming because she couldn't afford to feed her many children on a reporter's salary.I have a friend who grew up in postwar Korea where many children were orphaned. Her father was a pastor and took in around a hundred children. It really is possible to do extraordinary things for others when the need is great. Gladys shows us that even in poverty, creative thinking and an optimistic attitude can solve many problems that seem insurmountable. The stories of the abuse and neglect of these children brought tears to my eyes. Jessica Yu has done a great job at making Uganda feel real and bringing to life both Gladys and the children. I have no idea how she was able to choose out of the hundreds Gladys helped. This book will change your perspective and your sense that you too can help in some way.

Some people are ordinary. Some more than ordinary. And some people are extraordinary. This is one of those who's efforts put her in the extraordinary category. Five thousand young children live on the streets of Kampala, Uganda. The book Garden of the Lost and Abandoned profiles Gladys Kalibbala who is part journalist, part detective, part good samaritan as she puts together pieces, rallies resources and tries to save as many as she can. Gladys was a middle aged woman who had not completed school. She had a job at a newspaper where she struggled to earn money to support two teens. She got the job at the newspaper on her curiosity about people. After reporting on several of these lost and abandoned children, the editor then asked her if she could make a weekly column out of these stories afraid that there wouldn't be enough material. Sadly Gladys knew that there would always be material as the lost and abandoned kids were too prolific due to poverty, AIDS and internal crime and terrorism. This book is the story of a strong and extraordinary woman and the stories of a few of the thousands of children she has helped. I laughed, cried and was inspired by the stories. I looked up Gladys Kalibbala on the Internet and she is indeed a fascinating woman.

Ella Enchanted is a cute fairytale. I saw the movie years ago and thought I’d give the book a try. They don’t seem to follow each other too closely but both are fun for different reasons. The premise is the same, a good meaning fairy bestowed a terrible gift on a child to be ever obedient. Sure it seems like a good idea except there is no single person that Ella has to be obedient to, anyone can give a command and she has to follow. It wasn’t too bad growing up, since she was treated well but after the death of her mother others found they could boss her around too and that is when Elle finds herself in a pickle. This is a cute tale where Elle must save herself from the ‘gift/curse’ if she is ever going to have a normal life. All she needs to do is find that dang fairy who bestowed it on her. It’s a play on Cinderella with a twist and short enough that it was an easy read. This is one of the few instances that I enjoyed the movie version a little more. But as light fairytales go it was fun.

Doing a fairy tail reimagining can be a slippery slope as your in danger of falling into a straight retelling which no one really wants to read. We want a unique spin on a story we know well. Ella Enchanted does a great job of managing this, save for the end which felt exactly the same as the original tale. That one knock aside, the author adds so many newer elements that one misstep isn't that big a deal. In fact, aside from the last few chapters, there were times I forgot this was a new take on Cinderella.Introduction of the obedience spell was easily my favorite new aspect to the story, leading to a rather interesting plot of Ella trying to break the curse by finding Lucinda, the fairy who cast the spell on her. More so then that, it provided really entertaining and interesting internal dialogue as she struggled to fight against the curse, ultimately failing each time. Lucinda herself is also a really entertaining character, one of whimisicalness and lack of fore thought. I'm a sucker for characters who have good intentions, but only seems to bring harm.As it should be, the best character in the book is Ella, honorary mention going to her dad who was cold as ice yet had something about him that pulled you in. With Ella you have a spunky young girl who just wants to be able to live her life without being told what to do. Her interactions with others as well as the internal struggle I mentioned above, are just fun to read. I particularly liked how Char and her acted around each other. It never felt forced, their enjoyment of each other culminating in love made sense, if with a slant towards them both being young.Books definitely worth checking out if you want a new take on an old tale. I know it's made me want to buy and read Fairest as soon as I can.

I read this book many many years ago when I was a teenager and absolutely loved it. I have reread it through the years even as an adult and I just bought it for our niece as a Christmas gift. It is a wonderful story of a young girl who is "gifted" with obedience, but every gift comes with a catch. It is a story of adventure and a girl trying to be herself. Along the way there are many different creatures she meets (giants and trolls oh my) and a very heroic young prince. I would definitely recommend this book to young and not-so-young alike.

I hated reading as a child. I struggled making sense of every sentence and read only what was required of me in school. In 7th grade I stumbled upon this gem that changed how I would view reading forever. I loved the world Gail Carson Levine created, and the strength of her main character in the face of every challenge she faced has remained with me as an adult. If you have a young resistant reader, pick this up. If he or she still resists, get the audio book--it's flawless and wonderfully narrated with each character uniquely voiced. If you read and love this book and are looking for a similarly fiery heroine, I highly recommend the Boston Jane historical fiction series by Jennifer Holm.

So warm and wonderful. This is the best take on Cinderella yet, (although the Drew Barrymore movie, Ever After, comes close) because it makes it seem to real and possible yet at the same time draws you into a magical world.Top praise: the relationship between Ella and the prince, Char, is developed over a long time, so none of the “fall in love at first sight” crap that so many tales lie to our children.Besides that’s, it’s written very well, the world is thoroughly explored, and the characters have depth. Great book, probably most suited for pre/teen girls, but can be enjoyed by all ages and genders.

This is the one volume I couldn't wait until it got translated and printed because the story focuses on the newly introduced character Ban! He reminds me of Greed from Full Metal Alchemist, just by the way he handles himself in his fights in the previous volume and in this volume and his manner of speaking; i.e., dissing pretty much everyone. I am disappointed in what transpired to him the the end of this volume but I am not going to spoil it. To me, this is the best volume to date!
