As a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, I devoured “The Dog Stars†and then started gifting copies to my reader friends. When he published “The Painter,†I read it immediately and it didn’t disappoint.I’m a guy. I like guy stuff. Heller writes about guys doing stuff—surviving after a worldwide calamity; communing with nature and killing a bad guy (unintentionally; he had it coming!); navigating a dangerous river and saving a woman in distress—so I’m in.“The River†is streamlined, coming in at around 250 pages. I read it in a couple of sessions, squeezing it into my schedule as often as possible. There’s no discernable fluff. It feels intimate and reminded me of Tim O’Brien’s work in its limited scope. The way Heller tells the story—it’s not a straightforward A to B journey; there are turns and backtracking and changes of pace—reflects the river itself. It starts at a meandering pace and quickly picks up speed.Heller writes with an authority born of experience. Everything feels completely authentic. So much texture. I think I said much the same in my review for “The Painter,†but his writing and his eye for detail really remind me of James Dickey’s “Deliverance.†Dickey was a poet who brought his keen eye for nature to novel writing and created a fictional touchstone that most stories of canoeing down a river will naturally be compared to, which is why I was surprised and pleased that Heller mentions “Deliverance†and name-checks Dickey.(Skip this if you're concerned about possible spoilers. Something occurred to me a few days after I finished the book and had some time to digest it. I was ultimately satisfied with the book's resolution, but I think it might have been more interesting for the "less manly" character to have had to step up to resolve the central conflict. As-is, it's fairly straightforward and unsurprising, and not much of an arc. There's circularity and *some* closure for the protagonist in terms of what's haunting him, but the resolution of the conflict doesn't specifically "kill his ghost." C'est la vie.)"The River" is another winner from Heller. He is an amazingly talented writer and I would be pleased to read anything he put out.
I'm reviewing The River by Peter Heller.It's a familiar theme - friends get together to go on a canoe trip and things go wrong.What this books lacks in originality is made up for in well-written descriptive fiction.Cautious Jack and optimistic Wynn are college students that want to go on a whitewater canoe trip on Maskwa River in Quebec. I know what you're thinking: what could possibly go wrong?I won't summarize the plot here but will say that this is a nicely written book. The descriptive language Heller uses really makes the river and nature come alive. It is exciting, troubling and uplifting. Nothing felt contrived - it's a fast paced read which has elements of adventure and a thriller.Overall - this is a good read, especially if you like tales of survival.
Having lived in interior Alaska for nearly 40 years, I understand the beauty, brutality and unforgivingness of wilderness. Mr. Heller's poetic description of natural beauty has no rivals in contemporary fiction. He just plain gets it. What he doesn't get, however, is that there are often no second chances. Not having a Satellite phone, leaving fire arms behind, and not taking watches or compasses can be a death knoll.When Wynn and Jack, two Dartmouth students, set out on a canoe trip on the Maskwa River in northern Canada, they expect sunny days, beautiful scenery and solitude. They do not foresee trying to escape a dangerous forest fire or fearful encounters with other campers on the river. They don't expect to be in the middle of a mystery that puts their very friendship, all their wits, and ability to survive, at stake.Mr. Heller's language is as poetic as I've read. He is in league with Terry Tempest Williams, Wallace Stegner, Annie Dillard, Helen MacDonald, and Henry Thoreau. Not only can he write beautifully, but the depth and perception of his voice made me stand still many a time as I read this novel.The author describes "the near silence" as "like a sacrament". As the protagonists face a horrific forest fire, "The northern lights had just enacted what the heat and sparks would do when they jumped the river. It was like a portent - more: a preview - and it was like every cantlet and breath of the night was filled with song - and silent. It was terrifying and unutterably beautiful." Not only the descriptions of the macro wonders of nature left me breathless, but Mr. Fuller described a "passing a wide cove with a pair of loons, one of which was probably nested nearby, and when they stroked past, the one closest tilted back her head and loosed a pitched wail that must have moved the trees like wind." These are just samples from a book that changed the shape of my heart in relation to the natural world.I am married to a plein air painter who goes to remote areas of Alaska where no one has ever been. Would he go without a SAT phone or firearms? Not in my lifetime. Could I suspend belief for Mr. Heller's book? The answer is yes, because Wynn and Jack are so young, because they may have the time to experience the tempestuousness and ferocity of the wilderness without leaving their souls behind.
