I chuckle when I read the other reviewer on this because I bought it wanting learn Italian to have a conversation with a friend only to find it was way too geared for people wanting to take a trip. Go figure.Actually I took a community ed class and this was the book the instructor used.The CDs are good, though the two native language speakers pronounce things slightly differently at times. The CDs are a big bonus over of other books and the main reason all the CommEd instructors for my district picked Living Lanuage.In addition they have some downloadable resources on their website, the URL in the book is longer correct apparently. I never had any problems but then I went to the main site, livinglanguage.com and then to Italian and then the labs. But class mates even using that path have had problems on their PCs.Their website also has flash cards and activities (only one so far I would consider cheesy) that are simple but you don't look or feel like you're playing a kids game. They have section to post questions.As for the grammar, the reason it might be heavy on that is because while in English the verb "to be" only has three present tense forms:Am - IAre - You (sg), We, You (pl), TheyIs - He, She, ItThe Italian verb "Essere" (to be) has:Sono - I, TheySei - You (sg)È - He, SheSiamo - WeSiete - You (pl)(I think I got that right, don't have my notes in front of me)(I've actually started learning a lot about English Grammar using this book, an expected side effect and bonus.)Italian also has Gender and the version of plural depends on the gender;so while we just have "round" they have "rotondo/rotondi" and "rotunda/retonde"This book actually does a good job of explaining that, though as with learning any language you may have to go over it a couple times. We all found it help to work through the lessons and then go back to the older lessons and review, they seemed to make more sense the second time around.Granted some of my appreciation of the book comes from the fact it makes me think and then I go looking for understanding on the web. But without this book I wouldn't have known where to start.While I didn't quite "love" the book, I liked it enough to order the full series. Which is only a bit more than this single book would cost but now THAT gets heavy into grammar and is definitely more than you would need for traveling--for the bit I've skimmed so far.
Got this for my dad as a Christmas present before his trip to Italy, and despite his dyslexia (he's not even great with English!) it really worked! He diligently studied on almost a daily basis for a few months, and when he arrived in Italy he was able to read signage and have a little bit of touristy conversation.
The material is very good but there was a problem with the tapes and by the time I got to the problem part, it ws too late to complain. If you buy recordings, play them all immediately.
I think this is one of the better products for learning Italian.
I am taking an Italian class but got this to go along with it. I love listening to the CDs in my car. The book is very easy to understand as well! Definitely recommend!!
