I have come to rely on the great advice of Rick Steves. I used his tour guide of Ireland to plan a trip several years ago and his information was invaluable. Right now I am using this book to plan a summer trip to Scotland. Rick puts things together for you and tells you how it is. I really like his black triangle rating system of places to see. He makes it easier to decide what places you really should see and what you can miss. Because lets face it you cannot see everything on vacation. He also provides great country specific tips and suggestions. Tips on saving money, renting a car, driving, using your credit card, etc.... His book provides valuable maps and a section an appendix that is chock full of information. I really enjoy how he takes your through the different parts of the country so you get valuable planning ideas. Keep up the good work Rick.

AS I'M FROM SCOTLAND AND KNOW THE COUNTRY VERY WELL, THIS BOOK COVERED EVERYTHING. EXCELLENT

Rick Steves' authors write the best guide books to Europe, but this book is mostly just an excerpt of the Scotland section of his Great Britain Guide Book. There is no point in buying both.

Rick as always nails it. If you haven't used his books for travel in Europe or the UK, you're spending too much, missing good stuff, and they are also fun to read. Look for his little "nuggets" of humor too...they're in there

This my second Rick Steve guidebook, the first being the one for Germany (very superior guidebook). This book was invaluable for my trip to Scotland, with loads of useful information. I carried it with me all the time and endlessly referenced this book before and while traveling, and even after I got back to remember what I saw/did and the stories behind what I saw/did. The book excels at giving the reader historical information on popular sites, such as Edinburgh and Stirling Castles, and William Wallace Monument, and more. I found the "walking around the city" sections especially helpful. I just wish I had time to read it thoroughly before and during my somewhat last minute and rushed itinerary to find more things to see and do.

This man knows how to travel and he knows how to advise. The best thing he does is cut through just the sheer volume of things to do, restaurants and hotels, etc. on which you need to decide. Will he list every hotel in a city? No, and that's a godsend. Instead he'll give you a list of 10 or so places that you can't go wrong with. It's nice to know you don't need to worry about picking places or things to do that might be a huge failure, scam or waste of time.In the case of Scotland, they actually have a very impressive and helpful tourism website. What I did, and what I would recommend doing, is going on Scotland's website and cross checking places to go and stay with Steve's book. If the website listed a place and Rick Steves said it was awesome, I felt pretty confidant that it would be a good place to explore. From that, you're pretty much guaranteed that you won't have any major disasters on your hands while you travel.His book is also great to have on hand while you're away. Oftentimes we'd have some more flexible day schedules and would look to his book to see what he recommended for a town we hadn't initially planned on visiting. It's also a nice small size so it's not super obvious that you're a tourist!

I used to not be a big fan of his books. But then I got past the hokey-ness and realized there is a lot of good stuff there. I tend to find the country/area guides better than the city guides, but that's just me. I got this the week it came out for a Scotland trip I am taking this summer. By the time it arrived, I thought I had pretty much planned it out. This is my first trip. This book caused me to rethink some things, confirmed others, and got me to revise my itinerary. I don't normally carry entire guidebooks with me. I don't think they're worth the extra weight. This one is going, however.

I was fortunate enough to spend 3 weeks in Edinburgh last spring. Most of that time, I was there for work meeting with folks from the University of Edinburgh but I also took the train to Stirling and the bus to Peebles. I relied heavily on this book to find cheap (but tasty) places to eat, interesting places to visit, and wonderful history lessons. It's written in such a way that you can pull it out while sitting in St Giles Cathedral or wandering Doune Castle and get some backstory right there, or you can easily skip the history and just get the details -- opening hours, ticket prices, etc.Additionally, this book was wonderful in my pre-trip planning. Rick Steves explains all the necessary and perhaps dull details that one really needs to know -- Visas, money exchanges, ATMs (called cash points in Scotland), public transportation, etc. I purchased several guidebooks before this trip, but I used this book every single day during the 3 weeks that I was in Scotland.

Decided on a semi-whim to go for it and build a small studio out back with earthbags. This book has most of what we've needed to get going on the job. Supplementary info is on the web and in other books, with different approaches that all seem to work, at least for the users. This book could maybe use a little more depth in a few areas, like plumbing and door installation, but I guess the authors assume anyone tackling a job like this is fairly confident, knows some things and knows how to find the rest--which is true enough in this virtual age. Comprehensive and well written, gives you plenty of details to think about as you approach your own project. A touch too much focus on domes, IMO, but that's because I don't intend to make any. If you do, you've definitely got the resources here to get you moving quickly and easily toward your domed domicile.

I really like this concept and this book explains it all in detail with a host of great pictures. How ever, don't try this in California until I write my own book on how to build an earth bag home according to title 24. Ha ha... This type of house can be build almost anywhere except California due to the overbearing earth quake restrictions. I have no doubt if constructed as explained this is a very strong structure, but the narrow minded building inspectors we have here just can't get past some things. Over all this is a very nice book with lots of pictures to help explain how to throw up a building using one of the fastest building methods around. I would highly suggest it to any builders library even if you build something else.

A superb book! Complete and detailed with every possible question addressed and thoroughly explained. Drawings, picture and diagrams are used to enhance the text perfectly. Links to other resources are abundant and current (there are too many books with dead links) and those links supply valuable add-on information that will be needed when I can start getting dirty. I am unable to build an earthbag house at the moment, but I continue to read the book in preparation for the day I can put the book to a full use.

I've been looking heavily at super Adobe. Kal-El Earth books are great but their workshops are pretty pricey. I think I got a lot of tips out of this book that I would have gotten out of one of Cal Earth's workshops. As much of this area in fact that you're sending it is a very dense read with lots of tips and illustrations it is very easy to read

If you want to learn about and how to build a house out of earthbags then you found the right book. I have a piece of property in the north woods of Wisconsin, and I was looking into building a cabin. I looked at all the traditional ways to do it. By accident I was looking at my fav site and it featured a how to on earthbag building. I was intrigued. It was a great intro but it didn't really answer my questions. So while browsing my other fav site (amazon) I found this book. After reading it cover to cover, it opened my eyes to the possibilities of building my dream cabin without spending a ton of money nor would I have to worry about chopping a bunch of trees to make a log cabin. If you plan on doing this, make a lot of friends and invite them over to help. Trust me it will cut down on the costs that way too. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to do this.The pro is also a con with this book. It gives you a lot of info on how to do this, but it leaves it open in a way that invites you to experiment with the designs.If you are looking for a way to build with out hurting the world around you, and you want something that can withstand an earthquake, blizzard, and most anything else mother nature can throw at you. This is the book that can help you build it.

Excellent, thorough, technical book on Earthbag building. This is a great book for someone who is really looking to experiment with earthbag building. I bought another book on Amazon that is way thinner/fewer pages and far less technical. The other book was _nice_ as an easy to read intro book on earthbag building, but this book is very thorough! I recommend this book for those looking into earthbag building! :)

My husband and I were looking into affordable way to own our own home, he had been in the army and many deployments and had built many sandbag structures while serving and knew first hand how sturdy and comfortable they were, so we decided to learn about building our own earthbag home. This book has taught us a lot and helped us to design and build our own home that will last many years and never have a house payment again! Highly recommended reading for anyone who is considering building your own home

Still a great read some 10+ years after it was first written

This is a great book but you shouldn't read it till you've read Dragons Dawn, which is really the beginning of McCaffrey's Pern books. Then this one fills in extra information chronologically before, during and after the activities of the first book, Dragons Dawn. The first short story in this book answers questions that the reader would have posed to him/herself while reading Dragons Dawn, about why the planet was allowed to be colonized, etc. The following stories in this book fill out Dragon's Dawn without having imposed the information unnecessarily on the quick, easily-read flow of Dragons Dawn during it's first reading. I loved this secondary book of short stories, and the way it was left till after Dragons Dawn to be read separately for all it's insights. Great idea, there Anne. I give it 5 stars, as I do all of McCaffrey's PERN books.

Great book! Great series! Gripping, drawing you into a world so well thought out, you can almost believe it really exists!The first three are the best in the series, and this feels a little out of time, but it's designed and written to fill in a lot of background that answers a lot of questions. Or, you can read it as one of the earlier books, drawing you through the series in a more chronological flow. Either way, I "HIGHLY" recommend not only the book, but the series!

Stayed up all night reading this one. I highly suggest that you read the dragonriders of Pern books in chronological order it makes the reading so much better. I have read all the books several times this is the first time that I'm taking time to read them in chronological order. I highly recommend this book to anyone from teenage all the way to 90s it's an amazing world.

As good as any Anne McCaffrey book! I personally found it hard to keep up with the jumps in time between the sections of the book but once I reoriented my self and made the connections it was great. It is refreshing though not to have to wait three books for a new generation. Being as Michael "Mihill" Connell was just born at the end of the last book and is grown and taking on riding responsibilities at the end of the second section. It makes it easier to see the big picture. I love the fact that Ms. McCaffery brings you back to threads of the story that up might not remember. The universe of Pern that she most expertly brings to life, has me enthralled to the very end. The richness of this universe rivals or in league with JRR Tolkien's middle earth or C.S. Lewis's Narnia.

I love the Pern series. I have followed Anne McCaffrey since I found the Pern books back in the 70's. Her writing is exceptional. I love her writings over her son's, but her daughter was not bad on this book. I enjoyed\ it.

I loved this book. I have read other books in this series, and this "intro to Pern" book - which although not first actually takes place as the first book, was very informative. It kept a steady pace and threw in a lot of twists and turns in the beginning to show how things came to be on Pern. Even though it took us through some events and jumped forward in time, it developed many of the characters to show the rich background. I loved this!

Anne McCaffery is my all time favorite author..I have read(and re-read)most of her books.Some are a little simplistic,some areenchanting,but all of them show what a great writer she was.Her visions of other worlds,other societies,and people and creatures of all types blend together and immerse the reader in another time and place.She cares about her characters,be they human or ,in this case dragons.She saw the struggles,trials and tribulations of society.Pern was not a perfect place, but one I like to escape to from time to time.I'm sure I'm not the only one who will miss her..just grateful she left her worlds for us to discover.

This is actually 5 short stories rather than 1 single story, set around the same time-frame as Dragonsdawn. I was fascinated to get the back-story of the original settlers (Dragonsdawn) and how it all got started, so really enjoyed reading more from that time period - many of the questions I've had over the years of reading this series were answered. I just wish the stories were longer, especially the one about the original survey team - they whetted my appetite and left me hungry for more!
