If you're a fan of Freakonomics and Super Freakonomics, you'll love this book. Here's why:Like many other people, after reading both of the Freakonomics books, I felt like I learned a ton, but I wasn't sure how it would apply directly to my life. And that's okay. They weren't writing a self help book, and I read their work because I was genuinely curious in understanding how the world works. But this book departs from their usual method of explaining how the world works and instead shows you how you can better live in the world. And that's why I believe this is their best book yet. Here's a little summary of what I learned:1. In one chapter, the three hardest words in the english language, they talk about one of the main problems that plagues people today - the inability to say "I don't know." And they show you how it's a deadly combination because "cocky plus wrong" is a recipe for disaster. They then show you how to avoid making this mistake. They even give a word for word script you can use.2. In another chapter, "WHat's your problem," they share the story of Kobayashi and how he became a professional hot dog - and food eater. They walked through his entire process and how he went on to eat 50 hot dogs when people thought eating 30 was impossible. And even though they're talking about hot dogs, you'll see how this can apply to everyone. As an example, back when I started creating videos for Social Triggers TV, a friend of mine told me they were filming about 6 videos a day. And I thought, "Well, I'm new at this ther's no way ill get there." And I would film 3 videos a day. Eventually, as I got good, I got to the magic number - 6 videos in a day and I felt like I was on top of the world. Until I spoke to another friend who told me they do 15 or 20 videos in a day. I was SHOCKED. But I went back to the drawing board, refined my process, and eventually got up to 17 videos in a day.I'm being vague here, mainly because I want you to read the book. But it's funny seeing how the same process I used to increase my video production was used by the hot dog champ as well.3. And my favorite part of the book is when they talk about what they call "the once and done" technique. If you're a non-profit, you'll LOVE reading about this because you'll see how you can potentially increase donations a drastic amount by using this simple marketing tactic. And that's it.Great book and I suggest you buy it and read it.

It is worth the time and the money. The book isn't as earth-shattering as Freakonomics, but it's pretty good. The 4 stars are very well deserved and maybe a little conservative... 5 stars might be a fair rating for the Kindle edition. If you buy the Kindle edition, in addition to the book it comes with a few articles and a Q&A session with the authors. These additions to the Kindle edition do add value. I liked their thoughts and the advice they gave the British Prime Minister on health care. The most interesting, however, was Dubner's interview:"... I think we should treat health and life and death more like a regular good....we need to - it's unfortunate, but we need to - make these horrible choices, where we decide, are going to send our kids to college or are we going to keep great-grandma alive for two more weeks, and the cost might be about the same for those two things. Right now we shy away from those decisions, and we pretend like life has infinite value and we can't make these choices."

Think Like a Freak offers a new perspective for thinking. Thinking is generally done on only one way, but Think Like a Freak offers its readers a new way to think about everyday situation. The truth is that we can’t really predict the future, there IS a medical reason for that condition- not just stress, causality is not caused by correlation, saying “I don’t know” is OK, giving up is sometimes the answer, and thinking like a kid is more beneficial than you think. The authors of Think Like a Freak try to present problems in a way that spin them on their head and force the reader to change their thinking and perspective. Saying “I don’t know” is HARD for most people. It admits defeat in some sort of way and most people don’t want to be wrong or defeated, naturally. But, the authors offer a new way of thinking. Saying “I don’t know” is not defeat, it is the beginning, the jumping off point for new discovery. It also, as the authors say, offers “the power of a good, randomized experiment.” Not knowing is not defeat! As a teacher, the chapter called “What’s Your Problem?” spoke the most to me. It speaks a great deal toward the education problems in the US. Teachers are under enormous strain from almost every angle possible, and Think Like a Freak offers a new perspective for tackling some of those problems. This book is changing my view of what it calls “noisy problems” and making me realize that there are new ways to experiment with learning. Students who come with baggage can be helped if we look at the problem a little differently. We all have barriers that we face out there, it is up to all of us change our perspective.

Q: What is this? A: This is a Reader's Digest version of much bigger books about Epistemology.Q: Who is it for? A: It is not for persons who have spent years reading about Epistemology (like the current writer) but for people who need something that is very light in tone and deliberately made to be very interesting.Q: What are some of the sources that expand on the nature of some of the topics covered in this book? A: 1. Super Crunchers: Why Thinking-By-Numbers is the New Way To Be Smart. Talks about only finding relationships between variables and not getting too caught up in cause and effects; 2. Adapt: Why Success Always Starts with Failure. Talks about making failures survivable and how learning what *doesn't* work is just as important as learning what does work; 3. Various books by Nassim Nicholas Taleb. This book talks about the limits of what *can* actually be known.Q: Do I recommend this book? A: Yes. Even for the full price (Kindle). And even for people who know most of all this information, it's good seeing the authors update said information with new and interesting examples and good prose.

This is one of the Great Courses offerings and is an excellent introduction to modern physics by an superb teacher. This short course will intrigue anyone interested in a beginning look into quantum physics, including Time travel, relative to what?, black holes, curved space time, Quantum Uncertainty, Quantum Wierdness and Schrodinger's Cat. Virtually no math is used and that helps hold the interest of the 4 out of 3 people who struggle with math. Professor Wolfson cures such problems with a subsequent course, "Physics and Our Universe: How it all works", also by The Great Courses. You and any curious person will enjoy the 24 half-hour lessons. This is at least as good as the best science shows on television.

Even though the item was listed as the DVD version of the course, I received the audio CD version. Both my father (68 year old) and I (39 years old) found the material to be very interesting and informative. However, the professor spoke so quickly that I really was almost unable to keep up. Both my father and I are very academic by nature, but I just had to return the whole set because it was just too fast for me, and my father agreed. I really felt like the lecturer was trying to fit a long lecture into 30 minutes and just barely succeeded.I would have preferred he speak at about half the pace he spoke. Then again, I prefer almost everything in life to be very moderately paced, so if you're accustomed to rapidity, you might find it just right for you.

A very good teacher. I wish I had counted the number of times he repeated a particular phrase, "all observers in uniform motion have as much right as anyone else..." (I can't remember it exactly). An excellent cd worth the price.

i listened to this twice an i liked it. The professor went too fast sometimes but definitely covered the subject comprehensibly and clearly

Good set of DVDs. The only drawback is that it was obviously done on tape first and later put on DVD. But the info, a bit dated, is still relevant and quite interesting.

Great!

The material is great:however, I thought it was a series of CD's --it came old cassettes. I am still glad to have the info.

Better than I expected. Especially the lecture on electro-magnetism......

We'll written, interesting, and very funny. Wonderful story of rough start and how things changed to unbelievable levels of contentment.

If you like to read autobiographies about random people this is a fun, easy read. Read the whole book in Brian's voice.

Growing into adolescence in the 1970s and 80s was one part torture and ... well, the other part was just a different kind of torture. The Beatles had broken up just as all the energy and excitement of the late 60s dissipated, and there we were, the last generation to come of age without a computer to occupy our time, and with only three channels to choose from on a small TV, and I was four years older than Posehn so didn't have the benefit of a VCR and movie rentals. But then some true heroes arrived to rescue us in the form of Lucas and Spielberg. And where Posehn found AC/DC and KISS, I found John Williams and James Horner. And of course, if you're a nerd, nothing's better than a shelf full of soundtracks. Who else knew that Williams stole his own music from The Cowboys when he penned the score for Superman's stepfather's death? But I digress.Posehn's stream of consciousness will ring true for so many of my peers from the era. For me, I simply changed heavy metal to soundtracks, and then changed the names of the bullies as well as the names of the attractive and impossible-to-so-much-as-talk-to. And his horror was my science fiction, though my seeing The Omen in the theater when I was 13 left me with a long life of looking in photographs for lines of unknown origin aimed at my neck. Those for whom the book doesn't ring true are probably the aforementioned bullies or attractive popular people, who won't get more than a couple of pages into this text before saying, "What the bleep is he talking about?" And then they'll put the book down never to return. But if you were one of the outsiders looking in, and even if you still are, and especially if you don't yet realize that being on the outside is far more interesting than being on the inside, Posehn's text is entertaining and an enthusiastic reminder of what life was like for kids and teens in the politically incorrect 70s and beyond.

When I first saw this book, I thought "Who is Brian Posehn and why does the world need a book about him?" I did a little search engine magic, and realized he's a very familiar character actor and comedian. And then I realized he held a few of the same interests as me and I love a good biography, so I was excited to read it.When comedians write books, it can be hit or miss- several extraordinarily funny comedians have written memoirs that are designed to be as funny as their acts, but they fall flat because their voice is missing from them. This is *not* the case with "Forever Nerdy"- Posehn is an awesome storyteller, and his comedic voice and personalities definitely translates to his writing style. You can hear him narrating the book, telling you these stories. And Posehn is true to himself- this isn't book about what's he accomplished and how all his experiences made him into the man he is, instead it's a book about what he's all about. His experiences have definitely shaped him- everything from Star Wars to Rush to his crappy time in high school (oh my gosh, those chapters *really* resonated- music got me through high school, too), to discovering Kiss to breaking his back (there's a Spina Bifida mention in that chapter, which I have, so so I decided that was an unintentional shout out to me), to how James Hetfield dissed him twice (almost...), to how he got into comedy, to how he met his wife, to how much he revered his grandma, to his relationship with his mom... all of these things are not told as "here's what I went through and how they made me stronger" but rather "hey, let me tell you about the time this happened."It's just great to read a book that's not only genuinely entertaining but also *real*. Sometimes life has really strange ways of getting you from point A to point Z and it doesn't go as you'd think it should or as you'd expect, and there are lots of highs and many lows (many, many lows) along the way, but I think the thing I came away from this book with is that Posehn is a great example of how staying true to yourself and not sugar-coating everything can really lead you to where you need to be in life.As far as laughs- I RARELY laugh out loud at books, but there were several things that made me have to stop reading so I could catch my breath- especially the Elvis Windmill episode.Just read it. It's a lot funny and a little dirty and just generally entertaining, and I would totally buy this guy a cup of coffee if I ever ran into him. I hope he writes another book- I'm sure he has a zillion more stories to tell.

This book was a generally fun read, but fun like ice cream - it didn't stick with me all that well.I felt like this was a good biography for any child of the 1970s-80s, and the whole nerd culture of that era really came to life - I saw myself in a LOT of this, uncomfortably so, but in a funny way. The nerdiness, the divorce, the movies, the games, the silly hobbies that my whole life revolved around. Why the book was just three stars was mostly just the lack of a change. It was fun, but the stream of conciousness style seemed less deliberate and a little too weakly edited. Like it was a quick draft he wrote, but instead of serious editing, they just let an early draft stand alone. I don't think that's actually the case, but how it it read to me. So I was entertained, but not in a deep way.A good comeback to that is what was I expecting? The book is described pretty accurately and maybe it's unfair for me to expect more depth. Still, I did.I did know how Brian Posehn is, and I do think this was a funny book. I think if you're expecting a fun - but also often tragic - romp through the 70s and 80s, you'll appreciate and enjoy it....but how much it sticks with you, I dunno. Not much.I could give this four stars and be fair. I'm giving it three stars so potential customers who expect some sort of deep epiphanies in themselves (the author has plenty, but I didn't feel the carryover) know that this isn't that kind of book.
