As one who invests for long term reliable income using the dividends paid by publicly traded stocks, I find the content of this book good and most of it useful, at least at the conceptual level. The author gives several examples of companies who have accelerated earnings, delayed expenses and booked what should have been operational cash flow as cash flow used for investing activities. This is good and helpful. But what the book does not do is show you where you can find such information in the quarterly or annual shareholder reports. Where would I go to find information that would lead me to understand that the company is selling its A/R and what wording is typically used that would suggest A/R has been sold?And one constructive suggestion to the author....most who will want to read your book are sophisticated enough to know the basics of financial statements and are likely interested in getting into the 'meat' of the shenanigan. But you often begin chapters or descriptive sections of a chapter with somewhat lengthy quaint metaphorical examples as a lead in to the shenanigan you're about to address. As I progressed through the book, I found this distracting and would skip those pages. I appreciate keeping the book interesting and non-boring, but sometimes a little bit of analogous description goes a long way :-)Otherwise, this is a very good book on this subject.

The book by Howard Schilit and Jeremy Perler dives deep into the dark world of corporate accounting, blowing apart common tricks corporate accountants use to make businesses look better than they are.The book hits hard on the many changes in GAAP accounting and how masterful accountants trick business analysts with gimmickry.In total there are: 7 Earnings manipulation shenanigans – These run the gamut from simple revenue recognition discrepancies to very disingenuous sales processes that allow a company to record revenue before a sale is even made. The author boosts this section of the book with high-quality examples from leading public companies including Sunbeam and IBM. You won’t believe the extent to which high-profile companies report earnings beats with fictitious accounting numbers. 4 Cash flow shenanigans – The cash flow statement is one of the most difficult to engineer – a company produces cash, or it doesn’t. However, accounting teams still have four methods to boost cash flows when a business would otherwise produce very little free cash. This section primarily focuses on how businesses shift financing cash flows (money from stock and bond sales) into operating income. Also, this section uncovers how acquisitions and disposition can be used to make cash flow look stronger than it really is. 3 Key metric shenanigans – This section targets the key metrics used by executives when they talk about their business and brand. In particular, it examines how corporate brass can turn attention away from struggling businesses with non-GAAP measures like “same store sales” or “average revenue per user.” This section curiously touches on the subject of “bookings,” a metric used by recent IPOs like Groupon to hide their true revenue per user metrics. The author makes frequent references to massive scams like Enron and Worldcom, and even goes back in time to show you how investors could have caught onto the false accounting that made these companies the biggest frauds in Wall Street history.What I like most about the book is that it doesn’t just expose the gimmicks that businesses use to fake their financials. Instead, the authors go to great lengths to give examples, and then explain how you can fact check the accounting of any public company.All in all, at little more than $18 for the hardcover, this is a must-own book for any serious individual stock investor. It’s easy to read, easy to follow (there are literally hundreds of examples), and easy to apply what you learn to companies you watch immediately after reading.

I personally loved this book for the following reasons:Very clear graphics to follow.Very clear break down of how companies manage money inappropriately.Easy to follow and actually a fun read from a typically dull subject.If anything the only two downsides from this book are below:The transitions between sections and sub sections are repetitive, and a little annoying.The author occasionally talks down to the reader, and I think this is unintentional.The overall content, author knowledge, and easy to read breakdown of accounting gimmicks gets a 5 from me.

Very scientific. Very thorough. Might be a bit too nerdy for most people. Definitely written for the neuroscience freak who likes food. For people that curious to know why things work. What is a flavor image. It won't prepare you to cook any differently. It won't help you to win any culinary awards. What it will do, is provide a solid appreciation for the profound miracle that occurs when the perfect bite hits your tongue.

This is a pretty interesting look at how your brain perceives and remembers flavor, a deeper understand of how flavor works and how to achieve certain feelings and flavors. I recommend this book to anybody in the food industry looking to understand the science of flavor a bit further to develop their craft. Definitely not a stand alone book but a good way to start!

After the decent introduction this book plummets into the black hole of bad science writing. Nothing can save it because Shepherd doesn't really have anything new or cohesive to say about psychology and flavor. Lots of big names are tossed around (McGee, Beauchamp, Wrangham, Sclafani, etc.), but this just makes him and his research feel shallow. A quick look at the puny bibliography shows how little effort Shepherd put into the book.Strangely, reviewers haven't commented on the bad writing, but they have said the book is "a dense read." This didn't turn me off from the book because I don't mind dense reads if the material is necessarily dense. But this book is needlessly dense. Here's a quick example of a sentence:"Just as the muscles of the nostril manipulate the inhalation of air, so are they coordinated to direct the air streams into the snout." (23)What? Why is this written as a parallel sentence? Instead of nostril muscles "manipulating the inhalation of air," can they just breathe in or sniff instead? Are they "coordinated to direct the air streams," or do they just direct the air streams? The book is made up of these sentences, and together with the name dropping, the result is a rambling 200-page lecture given by a pretentious Yale professor. Even more pretentious than Herve This, because although both authors baptize a new field, at least This was French and poorly translated.

Very interesting read. A bit repetitive but still very educational.

I'm a molecular gastronomy geared chef and read this book to get new insights into ways to manipulate my diners' experiences. I was not disappointed. Shepherd does an excellent job of walking you through each step and train of thought that ultimately gets us to flavor, and yes, it is repetitive as Shepherd writes as I can only assume he teaches classes (start off with a summary, give new material, end with summary), but that repetition was useful for me as a practitioner trying to chew my way through very dense matter. Even some of the most basic knowledge has changed the way I now cook - for example, I questioned the role of oil based flavors v. water based flavors in extending flavor in my customers as they exhale after each bite.It is not a light read, and certainly not a read for someone with just a passing interest, but for people who want a deep understanding of the interaction between brain, body and food, this certainly will satiate your thirst for the subject.

As a chemist, I can vouch for the thoroughness and scientific validity.

Richard Corn has updated his SAT math guide to reflect the revised test. This guide has a number of things I like. First, I like the organization. The topics are grouped in a logical manner. Second, I really like the variety and range of difficulty level of the problems. There is some really good practice in here. Third, this guide includes tips on getting the best use out of your calculator which most guides leave out. There are one or two topics I would have like to see covered more fully, but Mr. Corn has promised to add updates as released tests warrant.This guide is an excellent resource for students who are working with or without a tutor.

This was for my teenaged grand-daughter, she loves it.

I accidentally wrote a review for the old SAT Math Guide. This is the updated version for the New SAT and it's a perfect companion for students at ANY level. What's great about this book is that I can assign it to my students who are already in to 700s and students who are struggling in the 400s on the math portion of the new SAT. Students like that they're asked to answer questions without a calculator for simpler computations to help them feel more confident about their math skills. As the owner of a tutoring company, this was a natural choice because many of my ACT students really love the Ultimate ACT Math Guide by Richard Corn.

Awesome Math book for SAT Math basics and practice. This book covers all SAT Math topics from Pre-Algebra to Trigonometry and is exhaustive in terms of providing examples, lesson plans and math exercises. My daughter got a lot of confidence after doing this book and is performing much better on SAT official tests.

Very, VERY pleased with this purchase! As a 20 year HS Mathematics classroom teacher and parent of a current sophomore, it earns all 5 stars! All topics on the updated SATs are covered with a lesson review, and more importantly, authentic style practice questions for BOTH the now added non-calculator and the calculator section of the exam. It is perfect to focus in on specific topics in Algebra, Geometry, and even Trig, and examine multiple ways in which that concept may be tested. Great investment and resource.

First the good parts:- Solid, enjoyable world-building, with the competing philosophies of shamanism, the push towards modernization and conformity, and the historical ebb and flow of power and subjugation being the standouts. I found myself oddly intrigued by the history of martial arts.- The military portions, while exceedingly brutal (do NOT mistake this for YA and give it to your child -- hell, even if you're an adult be prepared for graphic violence, including sexual), were a lot of fun. There's a mix of practical warfare, including chemical weapons and incendiary devices, with magical stuff that was honestly pretty engaging.- A common problem when you bring gods and magic into fantasy is "Why is there any conflict if the characters are this powerful?". That is not present here. The consequences of trying this are shown, and they are BANANAS. It's great.- If you like characters who are allowed to be horrible people, then you will not be disappointed here. I saw another review that said the heroine seemed insane by the end. This is a feature, not a bug. Between the very graphic war crimes and what we learn of the human relationship to the gods it's amazing anyone is still remotely functional by the end.- You get to the end and it's like...wow. This can't end well. I consider this a plus.Weak points:- Did feel like the first book could have been condensed. The primary conflict didn't come into play until 40% of the way through, after which the military portion kicked in and carried it through to the end. (Oddly you could conceivably start with Book 2, since it even included its own prologue.)- The style may be hit-or-miss for some. It lacks the stuffy tone of Tolkien-esque Epic Fantasy, which I appreciate, but occasionally veers into Quippy Territory. Depending on your preference this may be a pro or a con.- Very particular point: May read a little weird if you're a Japanese-American. This is influenced by real atrocities committed during the Sino-Japanese War, so if you're not willing to think about that ugly bit of history just skip it entirely, but oddly what bothered me more was that the Japanese proxy race were described in the same generalized terms of hive-minded fanatical hordes that were used to describe Japanese-Americans during World War II. There's a touch at the very end that indicates the culture isn't uniform evil, but we never seen anything to challenge their depiction as anything but sadistic monsters. There are also some textual reasons to present them as one-dimensional, and it may be challenged in the second book. Obviously this didn't keep me from enjoying the book, and it may not bother others at all, but if you do happen to have this background and just wanted to settle down and enjoy some Asian-inspired SFF do not be thrown.All in all, a little bumpy but intriguing enough that I'll be checking out the sequel.

I finished the book several days ago and I'm still disturbed by it. Although the protagonist is a young woman, this is not a YA book. The first two thirds of the book lure you in and make you invested with the characters. Rin Fang is a war orphan in the Nikan empire, whom the state has placed with an abusive family. Faced with the prospect of an unpleasant marriage, she becomes determined to take the civil service exam and earn a place in a service academy. She sets her sights on the most exclusive one because it's free for those who earn a place. She studies obsessively, burning herself with candle wax to stay awake, and wins through. At the highly stratified academy, she's an outcast because she's a dark-skinned peasant with no connections, having only one friend. This part of the book covers her education and development as a student, and it's leavened with bright sparks of humor. The setting is derived from China in the first half of the 20th century, mostly, and a pantheon is described as well, the nature of religious belief and the gods are important.. There are enough changes to the setting that it isn't a direct copy. World-building is limited in the sense that it's already familiar, it's not extensively original. This is not a criticism; the author's skill is such that it all feels fresh and the characters are vivid; it's easy to get on Rin's side. The characters aren't idealized or almost perfect with a few small flaws; they're allowed to be well rounded with good and bad traits. There isn't much character development, but that also makes sense since the students are being indoctrinated into a certain mindset and their concentration is on their studies.The last third of the book is... harrowing. If this is the first of three books, I'm not quite sure that I can take the remaining two. This third of the book focuses on the invasion by the Mugen Federation, the analog of Japan, similar to Japan's predation before and during WWII. Three specific atrocities have been adapted for this story: the comfort women, Lab 731, and the rape of Nanjing. The book is dedicated to "Iris," who I take to be Iris Chang, the author of a history of the atrocities in Nanjing. I've read that book and after reading this book, I can say truthfully that for me the fictionalized account is more disturbing because of the way the characters respond. The writing is so vivid and haunting that it's almost like you're there with Rin and her cohorts. You're with them as they come across the atrocities. It's not enough that the city's inhabitants were killed, it's the creativity displayed that will turn your stomach. The violence is present and brutal, but it's not gratuitous. And you see how soldiers respond to exposure to these sights. While these horrors are awful enough, it's the unraveling of our characters who are confronted with them and what they do that is heartbreaking. What happens to Rin is believable because it's a logical outcome from what she's experienced and endured and the power she can command.. Possible spoiler: Her revenge is catastrophic and you could draw a parallel with the atomic bombings too, just even more devastating.This is an extraordinary book, but at the same time I can't say that I'm glad I read it because the depiction of war is so heavy-hitting and brutal. It is definitely worth the read, but be warned; this isn't a book you can finish and set aside, forgettable.

The reality is, no review I write can come close to capturing the sheer experience of reading The Poppy War. It is dark, brutal, and oftentimes, presents moments that will make your heart ache and your core hollow. If you are looking for a light-hearted beach read, this is not the book for you. However, if you want a story that can give you a taste of the pain of warfare, and introduce you to characters that will haunt the depths of your mind for years to come, you need this book on your shelf.
