Phonetics, since I've become interested in linguistics, has always been something on the edge of my comprehension. Being a perfectionist when it comes to language learning, it drove me insane. Yes, my Russian palatals were positively poisonous. My laterals were ludicrous. My ejectives were egregious.Okay, enough of that.Every expectation I had of this book was fulfilled. Are you looking to fully comprehend the IPA alphabet? You will. Are you looking to be able to more correctly pronounce strange foreign sounds? You will! This book, which I read lazily over the course of two weeks, allows you to not only speak accurately, but it delves deep into the nature of the construction of speech. No stone is left unturned. It is also very accommodating of various English dialects (GA and RP, and more), and it also references other languages during the course of study.As another reviewer said, you probably don't want to read this book in a library. My family curiously watched me as I would often begin to make strange sounds while reading the book. But, that's what really makes the lessons within stick to one's mind; the actual experience complements the learning.The only improvement that could be made to this book might be the inclusion of an audio CD, to perfect some of the sounds that are more subjective or downright unfamiliar (such as the cardinal vowels, voiced implosives and the pharyngeal articulations). However, that would probably defeat the purpose. The book doesn't aim for exaction, it aims for understanding. With the principles laid down in this book, you can easily find an online IPA chart to fine tune your sounds.In short, if you are searching for a phonetics book, stop your search now. You will not find a more accessible nor a more comprehensive introduction. You will find what you're looking for in this book!

If you or your kid is interested in accents, dialects, and sounds that humans can produce, this is the book for you. Every thing in this book is an exercise. These exercises help you gain awareness of various articulators, different modes of phonation, etc.This book does not come up with audio for a reason; Catford does not want you to mimic sounds from a CD; instead, learn aerodynamic, articulatory ways to produce sounds.If you don't want to spend $35 for the second edition, just buy the first edition. There is no difference between the first and second editions, except for few IPA symbol changes that changed between 1989 and 2005 IPA charts.

This has been an excellent primer to the topic. I have enjoyed working with it. I am a first year linguistics student and the material in this text has pushed me right across the content of the content in my lecture. The two chapters on articulation(stricture and location) and the two on the phonetics of vowels are the core of the text from my point of view. Well written, easy to follow and very practical.A useful addition to my library of texts.

Catford's last book is called an Introduction but it also contains some truths about phonetics that are quite profound. Especially useful are the discussions of phonation and stricture, where he outlines the articulatory mechanisms. Aside from the sounds of the oral cavity, which are found in all languages, Catford goes on to talk about the articulations of the pharyngeal cavity and gives instruction on how one can make some of these pharyngeal sounds, which are important for the learner of Arabic.

When I first got my copy of Catford's book, I was disappointed: The book simply looked to small!But when I opened it, I was astonished. It's full of practical exercises that will enable you to familiarise yourself with your speech organs and will teach you to pronounce all the major sounds of the World's languages.Throughout, Catford refers to major dialects of English, so it should be equally useful whether you're English, Scottish or American.However, if English is a foreign language to you (as it is to me), some of the exercises may be a little more difficult than they were meant to be, but that's the only flaw I could find in this fine book.It's amazing that phonetics can be taught so well without a tape or a tutor!

It's one of those books that gets you ready for some mind-blowing information for half of the book, then offers information that you can't really use right now, because you've not yet amassed wealth to shelter in the first place. I hate filler books, and this was puffed full of unnecessary words. It's almost like someone telling you "I have a secret! Are you ready to hear it?!" You say yes and they say: "Get ready, it's the best secret ever!" and you say "Good, tell me!" Then they go, "This secret will change your life!" and after this exchange goes on for 10+ turns, you eventually give up and walk away, because clearly this person is trying to sell you air in the mountains.

It's good enough to keep reading but often drags on extra fluff and nonsense that helps him fill entire chapters. It's too generic and often references, "speak with your tax advisor about this one". I am still learning things but nothing too significant or world changing.

There are a few nuggets of wisdom worth hearing in here, but you must wind your way through massive amounts of dross to find them. The book is 75% motivational speech material and anecdotal comments; only the remaining 25% is informational.The things you will learn from this book are highly generalistic, and many of the examples tend to be wildly optimistic... as well as oversimplified.Reading this book proved to me what I should have been able to figure out by reading the title.. if it sounds too good to be true, it is. The book informs the reader that by spending large amounts of money on real estate or starting a business, a significant tax break may be reaped on those investments. Just as the old saying goes, "you have to HAVE money to MAKE money," so also it can be said that you have to SPEND money to get tax breaks. I want my money back!

Shift your view of taxes and increase your wealth. It helps that I was already doing some of the things this book suggests and it will resonate more with entrepreneurs, business owners and investors, including aspiring ones. If you want to control your future then you should include this book in your library.

I heard the author talking about this book on a podcast and he mentioned how it was updated regarding the new tax code. Honestly, that was why I bought it, I thought it would have some good tips regarding the new code. It was very basic in that area and had only a very short segment. It did provide some actionable advice on some areas, however, the book gave minimal detail. As others mentioned, it does discuss in detail investing in real estate and using maximum leverage to achieve your results. I, personally, think some leverage is good, but max leverage on the downside is how people get crushed. He also is very down on retirement accounts, which I don’t totally agree or disagree with. I think some real estate with or without leverage and some traditional retirement accounts are a good idea. I would probably give this book a lower rating, but I think for some people starting out, this book provides some key advice they may not have heard before.

Good book, very helpful to a point and then of course you will need to go on his site and purchase other items you will need to grow and proceed. I recommend it.

This is a great book with excellent insight on how to use the current tax system to your advantage. It's not about cheating the system. It's all about to utilize all of the incentives offered to maximize your tax savings.Tom's writing style is very easy to follow, even through all of the numbers and details.I've learned a lot from this book and plan to keep it nearby for a long while.

I found this book to be a never-before-seen look into the lives of the Wright brothers. The pictures that this book features are really incredible. Anyone interested in turn of the century photography, aviation, or wright brothers history buffs will find this book to be a nice addition to any book collection. A lot of the photos were taken by the Wright brothers themselves, and its fascinating to see what they captured when they began their experimentation with flight. My only complaint would be that the paper quality takes away from the photography presentation, but it is a smaller book and I didn't necessarily expect anything fancy.All in all, for the price, its a nice coffee table book, a good gift idea for any history buffs, or just a relaxing read. I'm definitely satisfied with my purchase and would recommend it to friends and family.

I loved this book, the pictures in it were really nice and I especially liked how the book was divided into parts/categories. Some of the pictures were of plane/wing blueprints and I thought those images gave me a better look at how the Wright Brothers thought or planned. This book was also put together in an order. It started from the Wright Brothers' first blueprints, and made its way to their first flight. This made it more interesting to read. Learning about their work and being able to see all the different images was very cool. I highly recommend this book, especially if you are a plane or history lover.

Excellent contemporary photographs which visually document the aeronautical genius of the Wright brothers. Excellent companion to the biography by Kelly.

This books a wonderful addition to my library. Packed with information and great photographs taken by the Wright Brothers themselves, this easily digestible book is really well thought out. The photographs take you on a journey through one of the greatest stories in American history. You can tell that the author has a great respect for the subject--not just flight, but photography, American history, and the Wright Brothers themselves.

Good companion to the McCullough book. Great photos.

Extremely poor quality photo reprints on low quality paper. Simple text written in a childlike manner without detail. Horrible rip off.

About the Author

Larry Newman is the Founder and Director of Children's Music Workshop. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education, cum laude degree from Temple University's College of Music, a California teaching credential and a Master of Arts in Music Performance from Eastern Illinois University. Formerly an instrumental music teacher in the Philadelphia School District, Los Angeles Unified School District, and Santa Monica-Malibu Public Schools, Mr. Newman has supervised music programs in more than eighty public and private institutions from the Kindergarten through college levels. His rich diversity of experience includes schools from East L.A. to Malibu and from South Central L.A. to the San Fernando Valley. Larry Newman is the recipient of four Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards presented by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for Children/Youth Programming. Mr Newman wrote, directed and produced the shows which have aired nationally and feature students from more than two dozen Children’s Music Workshop school programs. Most recently, Mr. Newman was awarded an Emmy on July 23, 2016 at the Television Academy in North Hollywood, CA for his production “Music Matters: L.A. Kids and their Music”. In 2009, Mr. Newman was honored by the Los Angeles City Council at City Hall for his contributions to music education in Los Angeles. He was also featured on CityView's Channel 35 series, "Faces of LA". Mr. Newman received the 2006 Lori Petrick Excellence in Education Award from the Palisades Charter Schools Foundation. The award is underwritten by the Boone Foundation - a philanthropic group whose mission is to support "passionate people who provide excellent programs to youth". Larry Newman was also one of 40 teachers nominated for the 2007 25th Annual BRAVO Award, established in 1982 by the Music Center of Los Angeles County to recognize individuals for innovation and excellence in arts education. Excellent beginner books for the violin or viola player in their first or second year. Larry Newman has an entire series of music books for violin, viola and cello that are all excellent for players in their first few years. I would not consider these lesson books, but books to supplement beginner players to learn more popular songs. For my young boys, I have the Don't Fret colored finger guide on their 1/4 and 1/2 violins. Then to help them find the correct notes, I will sometimes use a blue, yellow, pink and green or orange highlighter to color the notes on sheet music. I know it's a learning crutch, but it makes finding and playing the correct note faster and easier....the more positive feedback they get in playing a correct note, the longer they stay with learning music and different musical instruments (I hope). I also like the books because the songs are also easy enough for the beginner player to start memorizing songs too. Between the cello, violin and viola, I think we own all of them.

I like this book and so does my son's violin teacher. It has great large staffs and notes. Good diagram of the violin and bow. Her one complaint is that they justify the measures instead of keeping them the same size. It's an editing/publishing thing, but it's not helpful to young children. It is helpful when measures are the same size so that kids have an understanding of note lengths and rests. The differing size of the measures can be distracting.

This is a neat book, but i bought it hoping to use it as theory along side the Suzuki method book. There is very limited theory inside and it is meant to be a method book, so not something that I will be able to use along side the Suzuki method book.

I work at a music school, this book (and others in the set) are a huge hit with the new little musicians! It goes beyond just learning to read notes. My daughter loved it. There are coloring and writing activities included!

Great book for young beginners. My daughter is learning violin in the Suzuki Method. I wanted to start helping her learn her notes and music notation. This little book is perfect. Large notes and notations, fun pictures and clear explanations. She does a few pages each week along with learning her Suzuki songs. She is six years old and in Book 1, and this is right at her level. I am so happy I found this book!

My daughter, who is 5, finds this book very easy to use and practice with. The large type and minimal items per page appeal to non-reading kids or those just learning to read. Songs are approachable and appropriate for her age.

My daughter loves this book, and so does her teacher. She is making amazing progress and she loves the coloring and drawing she can do in the book. It's easy for her to follow and easy for me to follow to!!

While there may be some conflicts, the real ones are on a matter of truth and principalities, wherein what science can help reveal about the natural world can provide understanding of how things work, and the Church can synthesize these things into what the natural world reveals about God and His creation. When authentic science and religion work together, miracles can happen, and even be granted greater reasoning and meaning for both faith and scientific understanding.

Benjamin Wiker's book titled THE CATHOLIC CHURCH AND SCIENCE: ANSWERING THE QUESTIONS AND EXPOSING THE MYTHS is a short but informative account of the History of the Catholic Church and scientific scholarship. Wiker was clear that many Catholic authorities carefully studied nature and the Cosmos in an attempt to understand the mystery of God's Creation and to make an intelligent responses to materialists and those who argued that Creation was achieved by random chance.The introduction to this book dealt with Lucrecius (c.99-c.55 BC)and Epicurius (c. 341-c.270 BC)who argued that men are predestioned by material forces over which they have little or no control. Wiker compared these concepts with Calvin's (1509-1564)view of predestination which Catholic authorities ardently opposed. Wiker also demolished the false notion that Catholic authorities opposed science by citing the SECULAR historian J.L. HEIBRON who showed that Catholic dignataries lavished wealth on scientific research. The Vatican Observatory is such an example. During the early history of the Catholic Church, astronomical studies were crucial if only to get the correct dates of Lent, Easter, Advent, etc.As readers may know, the early Christians were "radicals." To paraphrase G.K. Chesterton (1874-1936)men can easily have let an age to have its head but difficult to keep one's own head. Catholic authorities did not dictate science, and St. Augustine (354-430 AD) gave the Ancient Greeks credit for their work re science and mathematics.A recent trend that Wiker noticed is that honest historicans have checked sources and documents which clearly show that Medieval Catholic scholars contributed much to scientific inquiry.Northhead (1861-1947)showed that modern science depended on Medieval Catholic scientific studies. The fact that astrology and horoscopes were and are in vogue is obvious, but Catholic scholars and authorities condemned such concepts including St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274)and the Medieval Catholic Popes.Another popular myth that Wiker exposed was the nonsensical view that during the "Dark Ages," Catholics thought the earth was flat. St. Jerome (346-420), St. Ambrose (347-397), etc. knew the earth was round and had studied the work of Erastothanes (276-196 BC)who demonstrated the earth was round. Early Catholics including Boethius (480-525)also knew that compared to the universe, the earth was infinately small. Pope Sylvester II (999-1003)was well aware that the earth was an orb.Wiker provided a list of "Who's Who" re Medieval Cathholic Churchmen who contributed so much to scientific study. Wiker mentioned Robert Grosseteste (c.1170-1253)who accurately predicted tides, comets, the light spectrum of rainbows, etc. Father Roger Bacon (1214-1294)did original work re teleccopes and is considered by some historians as The Father of the Scientific Method. Father John Peckham (1230-1292)did original work in optics. Richard Wallingford (1282-1336) did complex celestial tables and improved the mechanical clock. One could write "a five foot book shelf" on other Catholic dignitaries and other Catholic Churchmen who did so much effective scientific research. Another aspect of Medieval university learning was that much of what was taught was mathematical.Wiker gave a good account of the Catholic scholarship during Early Modern European History. Wiker among others debunked the myths that Copernicus (c.1473.1543)was persecuted but actually was encouraged to publish his heliocentric theory as a theory. Galileo (1564-1627)WAS NEVER imprisoned and NEVER tortured. He spent his brief "incarciration" either in Florentine Ambassador's residence or the Papal Palace where he had his own chef and wine tester. In fact, Pope Benedict XIV (1740-1758)gave his Impramatur to ALL of Galileo's work. Furthermore, Pope Paul V (1605-1621)arranged a special celebration for Galileo in 1610. Pope Urban VIII (1623-1644), the Pope during Galileo's arrest, honored Galileo in 1624. Galileo had trouble because he was a rude guest and ungrateful to anyone who helped him but who disagreed with with him.Wiker's chapter on evolution and Darwinism clarified the Catholic Church's position re evolution. Wiker was clear that Catholic authorities DO accept evolution and c. 4 1/2 billion geological history of the earth. Catholic authorities also accept the c. 14 billion astronomical history of the universe. In fact, when Hubble (1889-1953) announced his Big Bang Theory in 1929 the Big Bang Theory implied a beginning of Creation. Father LeMaitre, S.J. (1894-1966), who was close friends with Einstein (1879-1955),produced a mathematical model of an expanding universe. What Catholics do reject in the random theory that men and women and life are a chance combination of elements and molecules. Wiker provided a clear analysis of how delecate the creation of conditions of life are and how complex life is which is well beyond any random theory. Wiker cited Cardinal Schonborn's book titled CREATION AND EVOLUTION as a source to examine the debate. Basically Catholic authorities accept evolution but reject Darwinian materialism and random selection. People are much more than their chemical composition. Bascially the Big Bang Theory implies a beginning or Creation which is reasoned conclusion. To deny scientific reality is to make a mockery of religion per St. Thomas Aquinas. The earth is galactical good real estate.Wiker produced a chapter re ETs. With all the money and effort spent, there is not one shred of evidence of ETs in spite of the films and tv series which promote such a belief. The only thing space probes have show is silent static. Wiker provided the space and time impossibility of ETs. Speculations taken as truth have exited for hundreds of years without any proof whatsover of ETs.Wiker gave a short reading last in his Conclusion which should help readers know more about biology, astronomy, chemistry/physic, etc. His book is not long, but Wiker has a knack of "making serveral points with an exceptional economy of words." The book was very easy to read. It presented its topic in a very clear, logical way. The book brought up several ideas that I had never thought of. The Church is not anti-science. The Church has been consistent in its refusal to accept materialism and other heretical ideas. I would strongly recommend this book.
