About the Author

Gary Monroe, professor of visual art at Daytona State College, is a documentary photographer with a long-time interest in "outsider" and vernacular art. His work has been recognized with numerous exhibitions and awards, including grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Fulbright Foundation, and he has been a popular lecturer for the Florida Humanities Council’s Speakers Bureau. His photographs have been published in Cassadaga: The South's Oldest Spiritualist Community (UPF, 2000), which he coedited; Life in South Beach (1989); and Florida Dreams (1993). This is the history of African-American self-taught artists who drove the highways of Florida stopping to paint the landscape as theysaw it before the age of super development. Many of them have pass but a few relatives remain and are trying to preserve this type of art. Currently, access to undeveloped land is one of their challenges. The original Highway Men painted and sold their work alongthe highways. They have captured "The old Florida" that many of us miss.

Good book about Florida painters- examples of the artists with back history about interesting group.

This book tells quite a story that every artist, beginner or professional, should read. To avoid working in the citrus groves of 1950s Florida, a group of Black artists turn to painting stylistic, imaginative landscapes of the terrain surrounding them. From their trucks and cars, they sold their paintings to anyone who would buy them on the highways, door to door, stores, restaurants and wherever they could reach people. Lucky are those who bought and held on to these paintings. Today, those original 26 highwaymen would be rich but in reality, they barely scraped out a living. Most people dismissed their work as "Motel Art", but now, whoever has one of the original 100,000 would see a handsome profit and would possess a piece of Americana.The book will make you want to search attics for these colorful paintings.

This is the real thing. This is the original Highwayman art book that first documented the journey of the highwaymen, who they were and how they got here. It is referenced by countless sources as the official list of the original 26 highwaymen. The first half of the book is mostly text with a few example prints interspersed and the second half is all plates of representative Highwaymen art. There now are several highwaymen art books, including 2 more by this author but this book serves as the bible for Highwaymen artist history.

Good book with great sample pictures of the artist work. It was exactly what I was looking for in relation to The Highway Men artist.

Great content.Good narraatives,I believe that the book would be much more beneficial and enjoyable if it were in a larger format of - say 8.5x11 of even 11 x 17 so that the besuty and details of the art could be better appreciated.But, I hasten to add - the book is Excellent, enjoyable and one you will probably definitely want to keep in your permanent library.

Gary Monroe does an excellent job in his book THE HIGHWAYMEN. Excellent info told in a short quick manner that anyone can understand. Whether you are new to the Highwaymen or collect like I do, this book is one to own. Set it out in your house and watch people get into it. RECOMMEDED

The audience for this book seems to be academic students of religion, rather than spiritual seekers or general readers. The varieties of what the author calls "fluidity" are analyzed and described at length, along various axes. He describes six degrees of "bonds" between different religions; and three different sources of fluidity: choice, receiving (typically in a mixed marriage), and collaborating. I won't attempt to explain these here. He explicitly rejects the notion that all religions say the same thing at bottom (ekam sad vipraa bahudhaa vadanti, as the Rig Veda says), but cheerfully accepts the paradox that one can believe more than one thing at a time, like the White Queen in Alice.The book is thought-provoking, perhaps more for what it doesn't say than for what it does. Underlying the issue of fluidity is the question of just what a "religion" means, exactly. Is it a set of beliefs about one or more powerful supernatural beings who take an interest in human affairs? (though Buddhists, many Jews, and most Unitarians wouldn't agree). Or is it a group of like-minded people who encourage (or try to compel) others to follow their moral or social or political views (usually on the right, but sometimes on the left, e.g. Quakers)?And then there's "civil religion" (saying "God Bless America" or putting In God We Trust on the money, etc.), which doesn't require any actual supernatural beliefs but just associates oneself with a national tradition. It's probably a safe bet that many members of Congress are in fact atheists, but since polls tell us that voters are more likely to vote for a child molester than an atheist, it's hard to find anyone in Congress who doesn't list SOME religion! And then there are the Christians who cheerfully unroll their yoga mats, unaware that they are practicing Hinduism. Is this fluidity?Anyhow, this is a book which will appeal to those with an academic or even a casual interest in how religions work, and how one can identify with (or practice) more than one at a time.

I requested this book because I know many people who find themselves involved in two or more religions, and many families with members belonging to different religions. The author, Duane Bidwell, deserves credit for bringing the notion of spiritual fluidity to a mainstream audience.The book seems to be the first on the topic, which creates special challenges. One of the biggest challenges relates to terminology and the author's well aware of the problem. The term "spiritually fluid" doesn't seem to have a universal meaning; fluidity suggests an identity that's in flux, yet he's not really addressing change. It's really about people who have two or more religious identities, such as Catholic and Buddhist. The author contrasts fluidity or "exceptional" spirituality with "normal" or "normative" spirituality. The term "normal" can come across as somewhat judgmental; normative works better as sociologists talk about normative ages. He's really talking about norm relative to particular societies. We should remember that the notion of a single religion was foreign to some of the ancient societies; I'm not a religious scholar, but I've read that some religions appropriated Christianity as just another god. In fact, some scholars have suggested that the Judaeo-Christian bible sometimes shows God as being "first" among gods, not "only."The book could have used a stronger editor to organize the content into meaningful chapters. After introducing the concept, Bidwell seems to have organized the chapters based on the way people arrive at spiritual fluidity: choosing, receiving or collaborating. In other words, did they seek out another religion or did they inherit a mixed tradition from their parents? The collaborative path is, as he says, difficult to understand because "language can only approximate the experience."But when understanding fluidity, what is most important to understand? Bidwell differentiates his book by promising to explain the day-to-day experience of fluidity. Along those lines, it would seem most helpful to identify the most successful ways to embrace multiple identities. For instance, some people who convert from one religion to another will feel instantly at home in the new religion and never look back -- a sort of sequential fluidity ; others incorporate their former religion into the new one, achieving a sort of synthetic fluidity. What kinds of participation lead to meaningful experiences, personal well-being and family closeness? What leads to confusion and chaos? size.If that distinction isn't meaningful, it seems we could characterize fluidity by how people integrate multiple religions. Some people celebrate both traditions; some practice differently in different places; some integrate one religion into the way they experience another. There's a reference to a man who converted from Judaism to Christianity yet continues to support his children in their practice of Judaism.Within the chapters, the topics tend to be, well, fluid. For instance, in the chapter on Receiving, the author includes a story of how his role changed as needed in response to specific situations.The best parts of the book come in the chapters on A Field Guide to Spiritual Fluidity and Observations, Implications and Provocations. The author observes that "spiritual fluidity's greatest gift to religion -- and by extension to human flourishing" could be the shift from analytical thinking that emphasizes difference to synthetic thinking that creates a gestalt (I'd say synergy) where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. He also notes that mono-religious choices might ultimately be marginalized, as more and more people participate in more than one religious tradition. The author's comments on "affinity" are particularly insightful; he feels an affinity for the desert, though he grew up in the country. John Denver's lyric "coming home to a place he'd never been before" recognized this possibility.Future writers on this topic might note that as a society, we're becoming more fluid in other ways. We speak of gender fluidity; many of us know people who've gone from heterosexual to homosexual relationships and/or vice versa. We speak of change and identity shifts. We rarely live in the same place all our lives; regional identity can be fluid across regions and countries. It would be helpful to draw some comparisons. The iconic monk Thomas Merton suggested, a long time ago, that some people will have temporary religious vocations; it's not too big a leap to suggest temporary religious connections that serve the person well for awhile.Additionally, it is important to understand many people no longer associate spirituality with religion. Many people profess to be atheists yet follow meditation or another spiritual practice.In studying a phenomenon, social science researchers typically go through phases from "What is it?" to "Under what conditions does this form appear?" This book remains closest to the "what" phase, where the author searches to exemplars and meaningful categorizations. The author seems to be thinking and rethinking these ideas. As a participant-observer he's got special challenges. He's made a strong contribution just by starting the conversation and stimulating new thoughts. It's up to others to add further clarity and ask new questions.

It provides decent information on some older bottles 1800's thru about 1915, but only the rarer more expensive ones.It provides no historical information about each bottle, only a description and pricing. Also provides info on newer (vintage) bottles like Jim Beam whiskey bottles, Ezra Brooks whiskey, Avon bottles, miniature whiskey bottles, soda bottles, Violin & Banjo bottles. All the pictures are good quality and in color. If you're an average Joe (Jane) collector trying to identify a bottle that you dug up in the back yard this book probably won't help you.

Not at all what I expected. This book is not written for the weekend collector. This book is meant for someone whose income is wrapped up in buying and selling bottles. This tome does not cover the bottles that came from your great-grandmother or that neat bottle you found in the backyard when you were planting a tree. Do not waste your money if that is what you are looking for. If you want a clinical book to be able to classify bottles by the way their necks are shaped or the amount of bubbles in the glass this book will fit your needs well.

I got this book for about 75 cents plus shipping on Amazon and it is well worth the shipping and change, the color photos of the bottles are beautiful! Printed in China and I guess that is why they got the book so cheap and the great color photos printed, as color printing is not cheap in the USA.The photos of the colored glass Hutch bottle, ink bottles, old blob top sodas etc just really inspire me. Glad I got the book, the prices don't help me much but I sure enjoy the myriad of color photos.

Great history on bottle making and development. The price guide is directed towards common rare bottles, if that makes sense. There are plenty of other bottles that did not make their list. Most bottles in this book seem to be from the east coast. I wish there were more Rocky mountain region bottles.

Do you want the clearest explanation of what a glisson is? You'd better buy this book. No one else will be able to tell you because it was invented by Curtis Roads. If you want the quick version, though, it's a glissando windowed to the size of a grain; i.e., if you've ever run a short sine sweep through a delay, you've already worked with the sonic equivalent of a synchronous cloud of them. 75% of the book could be described this way - sound generation so simple you could hit on it by accident, presented with industry-ignored jargon you can only get here. A large part of what remains is empty philosophizing/metaphor - i.e. the first 80 pages trace, among other things, the development of atomistic thought as applied to actual atoms. E.g., Roads mentions that we originally thought the atom was indivisible before we found its constituent components. Can his grains be subdivided further? We wouldn't know. He didn't ask; he simply drew a questionable tie between his compositional experiments and the fundamental forces of the universe. Quite a bit of this book is also dedicated to reproducing, in less detail, the documentation for various synthesis methods available to readers. Why read Roads' summary of CSound's granular synthesis algorithms? He doesn't go to the same level of detail, CSound and multiple versions of its manual are free, and his knowledge of the program is now almost eighteen years out of date. This book might inspire the odd idea, but I'd be surprised if there were someone who couldn't productively experiment before reading this and could after.

Truly fascinating. Curtis Roads wrote the book on Microsound before he wrote the book called Microsound. Fans of bit reduction, glitch, noise, wavetable and granular synthesis will find intellectual nirvana.

This is probably the best (and one of the only) books that delves into particle sound synthesis. If you have a passing interest in eclectic composition or audio programming, you'll want this book.

Great book, an excellent view of music and sound down to a microscopic level. Full of interesting ideas, and a lot of examples of contemporary practitioners in the field.

One of Roads' masterpieces

Many people today seem to be obsessed with recreating 'classic' sounds, whether it's Minimoogs, TB303s or even traditional orchestral instruments. So it's refreshing to find that there are still people out there intent on pushing the boundaries of synthesis further and creating new sounds. Curtis Roads has done more than most in this field, and this book on granular synthesis that he has authored is a fairly comprehensive guide to the subject.Roads' involvement with granular synthesis began in 1972, and his research in the field has resulted in him eventually developing his own software. Granular synthesis deals with sound at a 'quantum' level: the sonic atom being the individual sample (any one of the 44100 taken in a second at the standard sampling rate). To be audible as anything other than a click, samples need to be grouped together to form grains of sound. These grains are typically anywhere between three and one hundred milliseconds in length. Granular synthesis is concerned with the organization and processing of both samples and grains to create sounds that are often far beyond the range of more traditional methods of synthesis.The technology and software required to manipulate sound at this level is now commonly available. Popular programs like Chaosynth and Max/MSP offer in-depth granular facilities, and Roads' own programs, Pulsar Generator and Cloud Generator, are, as you might expect, specifically designed for this sort of application. Although this technology has made it possible, granular synthesis remains a complex process. Microsound is perhaps the best theoretical and practical guide to date, its 409 pages concisely and fluently written throughout. The first chapters outline basic time scales in musical structure and the history and theory of microsound. Chapters three to six deal with the theory and practice of granular synthesis, examining everything from the organisation and processing of grains to the implementation of micro-scale transformations. The later chapters explore the implications and aesthetics of composing with microsound. The book concludes with a brief chapter about the future of granular synthesis. If there is any fault with this book, it is that it may be rather academic in tone for some readers - it is not a 'how to' book. However, if you are seriously interested in exploring granular synthesis, and understanding the principles behind it, then this book is ideal.For those readers who would like to get their hands dirty themselves and try programming granular synthesis compositions, you might want to look up Jass and jMusic on the web. Jass is a unit generator based audio synthesis programming environment written in pure Java. Curtis Roads has been working with Granular Synthesis since 1972, following the work of Iannis Xenakis and Dennis Gabor. His decades of research and computer programs in this field have educated and inspired all electronic musicians who work within the particle synthesis field. My first introduction to Granular synthesis was Roads' article from a 1978 issue of the Computer Music Journal entitled 'Automated Granular Synthesis of Sound'.Microsound marks a milestone in granular synthesis and contains a huge amount of information, relating to it and other forms of particle synthesis, some of which were a direct result of Roads' own research (eg glisson synthesis). The book contains a full history of particle synthesis going back to the early philosophies aroused by the debate of whether sound is a particle or wave, right through to his own recent experiments and instruments. It gives full details on how to work with granular synthesis and also contains a CD full of examples, including some very historically significant pieces of music.The writing style is easy to follow, including a few humourous anecdotes - well I found them humourous, Roads probably found them frustrating at the time, although I am sure he smiles about it now :)There are a couple of minor quoting errors, but they do not misconstrue the meaning and are not noticeable unless you are going through the book with a fine tooth comb (like I did).For anyone interested in working with sound at a low (microsound) level, this is a MUST READ book!To any reviewers who do not understand all of the terms used, perhaps you should re-read Microsound and also any literature written on this topic in the last 30 years.

Phonetics, since I've become interested in linguistics, has always been something on the edge of my comprehension. Being a perfectionist when it comes to language learning, it drove me insane. Yes, my Russian palatals were positively poisonous. My laterals were ludicrous. My ejectives were egregious.Okay, enough of that.Every expectation I had of this book was fulfilled. Are you looking to fully comprehend the IPA alphabet? You will. Are you looking to be able to more correctly pronounce strange foreign sounds? You will! This book, which I read lazily over the course of two weeks, allows you to not only speak accurately, but it delves deep into the nature of the construction of speech. No stone is left unturned. It is also very accommodating of various English dialects (GA and RP, and more), and it also references other languages during the course of study.As another reviewer said, you probably don't want to read this book in a library. My family curiously watched me as I would often begin to make strange sounds while reading the book. But, that's what really makes the lessons within stick to one's mind; the actual experience complements the learning.The only improvement that could be made to this book might be the inclusion of an audio CD, to perfect some of the sounds that are more subjective or downright unfamiliar (such as the cardinal vowels, voiced implosives and the pharyngeal articulations). However, that would probably defeat the purpose. The book doesn't aim for exaction, it aims for understanding. With the principles laid down in this book, you can easily find an online IPA chart to fine tune your sounds.In short, if you are searching for a phonetics book, stop your search now. You will not find a more accessible nor a more comprehensive introduction. You will find what you're looking for in this book!

If you or your kid is interested in accents, dialects, and sounds that humans can produce, this is the book for you. Every thing in this book is an exercise. These exercises help you gain awareness of various articulators, different modes of phonation, etc.This book does not come up with audio for a reason; Catford does not want you to mimic sounds from a CD; instead, learn aerodynamic, articulatory ways to produce sounds.If you don't want to spend $35 for the second edition, just buy the first edition. There is no difference between the first and second editions, except for few IPA symbol changes that changed between 1989 and 2005 IPA charts.

This has been an excellent primer to the topic. I have enjoyed working with it. I am a first year linguistics student and the material in this text has pushed me right across the content of the content in my lecture. The two chapters on articulation(stricture and location) and the two on the phonetics of vowels are the core of the text from my point of view. Well written, easy to follow and very practical.A useful addition to my library of texts.

Catford's last book is called an Introduction but it also contains some truths about phonetics that are quite profound. Especially useful are the discussions of phonation and stricture, where he outlines the articulatory mechanisms. Aside from the sounds of the oral cavity, which are found in all languages, Catford goes on to talk about the articulations of the pharyngeal cavity and gives instruction on how one can make some of these pharyngeal sounds, which are important for the learner of Arabic.

When I first got my copy of Catford's book, I was disappointed: The book simply looked to small!But when I opened it, I was astonished. It's full of practical exercises that will enable you to familiarise yourself with your speech organs and will teach you to pronounce all the major sounds of the World's languages.Throughout, Catford refers to major dialects of English, so it should be equally useful whether you're English, Scottish or American.However, if English is a foreign language to you (as it is to me), some of the exercises may be a little more difficult than they were meant to be, but that's the only flaw I could find in this fine book.It's amazing that phonetics can be taught so well without a tape or a tutor!

It's one of those books that gets you ready for some mind-blowing information for half of the book, then offers information that you can't really use right now, because you've not yet amassed wealth to shelter in the first place. I hate filler books, and this was puffed full of unnecessary words. It's almost like someone telling you "I have a secret! Are you ready to hear it?!" You say yes and they say: "Get ready, it's the best secret ever!" and you say "Good, tell me!" Then they go, "This secret will change your life!" and after this exchange goes on for 10+ turns, you eventually give up and walk away, because clearly this person is trying to sell you air in the mountains.

It's good enough to keep reading but often drags on extra fluff and nonsense that helps him fill entire chapters. It's too generic and often references, "speak with your tax advisor about this one". I am still learning things but nothing too significant or world changing.

There are a few nuggets of wisdom worth hearing in here, but you must wind your way through massive amounts of dross to find them. The book is 75% motivational speech material and anecdotal comments; only the remaining 25% is informational.The things you will learn from this book are highly generalistic, and many of the examples tend to be wildly optimistic... as well as oversimplified.Reading this book proved to me what I should have been able to figure out by reading the title.. if it sounds too good to be true, it is. The book informs the reader that by spending large amounts of money on real estate or starting a business, a significant tax break may be reaped on those investments. Just as the old saying goes, "you have to HAVE money to MAKE money," so also it can be said that you have to SPEND money to get tax breaks. I want my money back!

It helps that I was already doing some of the things this book suggests and it will resonate more with entrepreneurs, business owners and investors, including aspiring ones. If you want to control your future then you should include this book in your library.

I heard the author talking about this book on a podcast and he mentioned how it was updated regarding the new tax code. Honestly, that was why I bought it, I thought it would have some good tips regarding the new code. It was very basic in that area and had only a very short segment. It did provide some actionable advice on some areas, however, the book gave minimal detail. As others mentioned, it does discuss in detail investing in real estate and using maximum leverage to achieve your results. I, personally, think some leverage is good, but max leverage on the downside is how people get crushed. He also is very down on retirement accounts, which I don’t totally agree or disagree with. I think some real estate with or without leverage and some traditional retirement accounts are a good idea. I would probably give this book a lower rating, but I think for some people starting out, this book provides some key advice they may not have heard before.

Good book, very helpful to a point and then of course you will need to go on his site and purchase other items you will need to grow and proceed. I recommend it.

This is a great book with excellent insight on how to use the current tax system to your advantage. It's not about cheating the system. It's all about to utilize all of the incentives offered to maximize your tax savings.Tom's writing style is very easy to follow, even through all of the numbers and details.I've learned a lot from this book and plan to keep it nearby for a long while.
