About the Author

Daniel F. Chambliss, PhD, is the Eugene M. Tobin Distinguished Professor of Sociology at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, where he has taught since 1981. He received his PhD from Yale University in 1982; later that year, his thesis research received the American Sociological Association’s Medical Sociology Dissertation Prize. In 1988, he published the book Champions: The Making of Olympic Swimmers, which received the Book of the Year Prize from the U.S. Olympic Committee. In 1989, he received the American Sociology Association (ASA)’s Theory Prize for work on organizational excellence based on his swimming research. Recipient of both Fulbright and Rockefeller Foundation fellowships, he published his second book, Beyond Caring: Hospitals, Nurses, and the Social Organization of Ethics, in 1996; for that work, he was awarded the ASA’s Elliot Freidson Prize in Medical Sociology. In 2014, Harvard University Press published his book, How College Works, coauthored with his former student Christopher G. Takacs. His research and teaching interests include organizational analysis, higher education, social theory, and comparative research methods. In 2018, he received the ASA’s national career award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching.

This was a required textbook for class but it's honestly one of the worst textbooks I've ever used. Truthfully, I am a smart student (I work full time and attend full time school and maintain a 4.0 GPA.) but this textbook made almost no sense to me. I re-read each chapter multiple times but the concepts were not fully explained and the chapters seemed to have no order or flow. I found that in order to do my assignments I would basically just have to google the concepts my professor wanted us to write about in order to get a more clear understanding. For example, here is a question my professor asked for chapters 7 & 8: [In regard to a fictional research study that we proposed] "Identify at least three types of descriptive statistics and one type of display (graphic) you would use to analyze the data and explain why you chose those." However, these chapters don't clearly explain what a "descriptive characteristic" is. Verbatim, here is what the text says in full about this: "A statistic, in ordinary language usage, is a numerical description of some feature of a variable or variables in a sample from a larger population, usually based on a sample of that population. (In the technical language of mathematics, a parameter describes a population, and a statistic specifically describes a sample.) Some statistics are useful for describing the results of measuring single variables or for constructing and evaluating multi-item scales. These statistics include frequency distributions, graphs, measures of central tendency and variation, and reliability tests. Other statistics are used primarily to describe the association among variables and to control for other variables, and thus, to enhance the causal validity of our conclusions. Cross-tabulation, for example, is one simple technique for measuring association and controlling other variables; it is introduced in this chapter. All of these statistics are termed descriptive statistics because they describe the distribution of and relationship among variables."In addition to not being clear, the chapters also seem to have no flow making it more difficult to understand how concepts might be related or to build from one concept to another. For example, in Chapter 11: Unobtrusive Measures, the authors start explaining what unobtrusive measures are and giving examples such as physical traces, archive data, observation and contrived observation. So far so good. Next, they provide a section called Content Analysis which goes through the steps of designing a study such as identify a population, determine units of analysis, select a sample, design coding procedures and develop appropriate statistical analyses. Again, so far so good. Next however, it jumps to a section called Historical Methods and starts over with different methods for conducting a study such as narrative explanation, event-structured analysis or oral history study. Where and how does this information fit in? Why were these methods not placed with the other methods in the first section? Next is a section called Comparative Methods and again, the authors provide information which I can't figure out what to do with such as Cross-Sectional Comparative Research and Longitudinal Comparative Research. Keep in mind that we've also studied these same concepts in other chapters so I'm not sure what they're doing here again. Lastly, there is an Ethical Concerns section and Conclusion which does not "tie it all together."These are only a few examples but the whole textbook is a complete mess of jumbled, half-information in my opinion. Perhaps these concepts make sense to a professor who is already familiar with them but as an introduction to the topic of research methods, it left this student frustrated and confused.

Wording in this textbook is horrible! Were they drunk or half-asleep when they wrote this?The layout is not user friendly or intuitive at all!Found some inaccuracies and info seems highly outdated.I hated reading this book for class.

I had to get this book for a course and even though I did not use it a lot of the time. I was able to still get a lot of information from it and it came in on time.

The binding of this book is badly damaged and the cover is not intact. The pages are fine and intact. I'm a bit irritated that there was no note about the binding damage, as I am renting this book and want to ensure I am not charged for pre-made damages when I return it.

Said it had water damage and ordered it anyway! Glad I did because honestly it isn't bad at all. Thank you :)

I used this book for a Senior Sociology Capstone class. It is one of those textbooks that spoon-feeds you information, comparable with a 7th-grade textbook.

The book is exactly what it claims to be: a scholarly edition of the saga/tragedy of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table based upon the Winchester Manuscript. It’s my fault for not researching more carefully, but this edition is heavily abridged which I dislike. Abridged versions are fine if you’re only interested in the core stories, but I really am interested in many stories that were omitted. Special to me are the very elements the scholar left out, namely: exploits of several major (if auxiliary to the main story) quests of certain knights. I mean, come on! Does everyone really think Sir Kay is just a blowhard bully? Yes, thanks to Walt Disney. But he’s a major hero to whom Arthur entrusts the safety of his kingdom while away on campaign! Another painful cut are tactical details of battlefield maneuvers, planning and strategy of companies and armies writ large, with the sole focus of any action scenes being at the micro-level of individual combat between two knights. There is so much more I want to read in Arthur. Just be aware of the version you buy. This was a very inexpensive soft cover printed on cheap pulp paper. It tells a good story, and was easy to finance, but there are other versions out there I’d rather read.

I got this book for class, so I've only read large segements of it. This copy is an excellent modernization of Malory's text with helpful footnotes and endnotes. The footnotes were always available to explain unfamiliar words without interrupting the flow of the story.

Unfortunately, I ordered the paperback version of this book (should have spent the extra money on a hardcover copy) and it was haphazardly crammed into the box along with a few other books I ordered. Cover is creased, the whole book is bent, and the edges of the pages are damaged. Also, this is a "slightly abridged" version of the text, not the full original.

If you are looking to just understand Le Morte, this is a good book. It's written in modern English, due to the fact the author decided he wanted it to mirror the Winchester manuscript as closely as possible, that is, he wanted it to be written in the most easily accessible language of the time. Therefore, the Oxford edition of Le Morte is less bogged down in old spellings and archaic language as other versions of the text.

Bought for college student, as described and hoping it helps him get an A. We’ll see.

Must have for those who love medieval literature.

Worth every penny. Magnificent book. Can't stop reading it!

Book arrived with binding coming off and falling apart.

I've ridden for decades--trails, low-level jumping & dressage, obstacles--but never started a horse from scratch. Now having two 22mo old geldings that I took on as orphan foals at 2wks of age, I've been doing tons of in-hand work on basics, obstacles, little trails, etc. This pair of books ("101..." plus the illustrated hardback text that is paired with it)is perfect for me/us right now. Because I've never done much longeing, and nothing with side-reins, surcingles, cavessons, long lines, etc, the detailed instruction on minutiae of how to hold or fasten things, and alternative types of tack, was particularly useful. The graded exercises started with 10-12 things we had gotten quite proficient at in-hand (eg, head down, whoa & stand, turn on forehand, sidepass), but quickly moved on to things I've never done, and my "boys" certainly haven't. I really appreciate Hill's focus on safety & on potential problems & their prevention & solutions--the kinds of things you get from a good trainer with lots of experience, so you can potentially avoid problems.

Cherry Hill's book take the horseman by the hand and allows he/she to understand what new things to try to change ones horse's behavior. Then, it is just up to the horseman's imagination and energy to implement and modify the techniques for their situation. I'd recommend all of Cherry Hill's products. Her methods compliment Clinton Anderson's techniques to allow the horseman to balance their approach.

Thorfinn the nicest Viking and the raging raiders is a really silly book. Thorfinn is the youngest boy in his family and his father is chief of their village Indgar !This book was super fun to read ! It was a quick read, but I really enjoyed it ! I thought the silly mix up between old and modern times was hilarious. The little cartoon drawings were a great addition and I really love the silly Viking information at the end of the book together with the cool trading cards !I bet boys and girls ages 6 and up would rally have fun reading this book ! (10 yr old girl reviewer :) )

Once you get used to the author's narrative style it is a very enjoyable read. The style is very much like listening to a story orally, rather than the way most authors narrate their stories, you will have to read it yourself to see what I mean. I think this collection of books would be best enjoyed as an audio book for this reason.I still find the brother the most interesting, although I do think he has adopted American idioms and ways of thinking terribly fast with only one year in America.The ending went really fast and all ends were tied up super fast. I was at 97% on my kindle and couldn't imagine how everything could wrap up so quickly, that is the only thing I did not like, just the feeling that it all happened too quickly at the end.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is the 3rd book in the series, The Sisters of Rosefield Series. Even if you haven't read the first 2 books in the series, don't worry you won't be lost while reading this book. I loved everything about this book!! Even though this is the final book in the series, I wish this was a series that could keep going, it's that good!! Reading the conflicting emotions 2 of the sisters are feeling regarding their futures, Emma wrote it so well, you fell like you're part of their lives right there in their homes with them. This was my first time reading a book by Emma Easter and jumping into book 3 of The Sisters of Rosefield Series wasn't easy. It is best if you read the books in order which I didn't do.The story involves the lives of the Gardner sisters and a half brother they didn't know they had. This book picks up their stories from the previous books and there is a lot of jumping back and forth from one siblings' story to what's happening in another siblings life.What I did appreciate was their faith and trust in God in facing their situations.This is a clean book and again best if you read the books in order.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I am a new reader to Emma Easter and the Christian genre - This is book #3 of the series and while it is not necessary to read the first two books of this series, I would highly recommend it so that you have the back history of the sisters and their brother. This is a fast paced Christian book that shares many stories within one story. The Author does a good job of making sure that the stories flow well with each other and you aren't feeling lost. The characters are easy to relate to and inspirational with their faith and determination. While Love Means Everything is the third book in the series, it can be read first. I am certain your enjoyment would be enhanced if all three were read in order, but I enjoyed this fast paced, Christian book. The book has many interesting characters. Their stories are interwoven. These characters all had great faith - and placed their trust in doing God's will rather than their own will. There was a fun sequence when good trumped evil. if you are looking for an excellent inspirational book, try this one. This is a clean Christian story about the complexities of love and life and how God cares about every part of your life and will lead you if you trust him to. It's funny that the ones that had the most materially had a harder time trusting God completely but the ones that had the least trusted him with everything even their very lives. I liked the small stories and how they were woven together to make this story work. At first I was a little lot since I felt it jumped from one story to another and then back again . It made my head spin a bit and had to reread parts because I got confused.
