Good, basic information about betta fish. I hope people who read it will come away with the knowledge that, although it is somewhat possible to keep bettas in small tanks, it is highly unadvisable. He, and many other responsible betta experts, tell you that the recommended size of a tank for a betta is 5 gallons, and never less than 2.5.Though he does mention it, I wish he had spent more time writing about the Nitrogen Cycle, and the importance of "cycling" an appropriately-sized tank while setting-up and maintaining your aquarium. It keeps your tank healthy by building up beneficial bacteria that help, along with regular water changes, manage the levels of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate in the water that affect the health of your fish. I urge people to try to look this information up. You can't "cycle" a small bowl, and that is one of the many reasons why small containers aren't recommended for bettas.Also, while larger-sized water changes are needed if you in unwisely keep a betta in a small container, it is unadvisable to do very large/complete water changes and heaving cleaning of appropriately sized tanks. I'm not sure why he tells people to do this, unless he is referring only to the maintenance of small containers. You end up depleting the beneficial organisms that build-up in the substrate and decorations, as well as in the water, that help keep your tank healthy.Overall, I think people will find this book to be helpful and I do recommend it.
I'm going to get a Betta and this book was a really good overview. It was humorous in spots and I learned pretty much what I needed to know. I had a Betta years ago when the fish was supposed to be kept in a vase with a peace plant. I regret ever doing that. This book has been very useful in how to properly care for a Betta. I had originally bought another book which I did not find helpful. This one is clear with easy to understand guidance. One thing I found missing and in other sources I read was that aquarium salt is recommended and why but not addressed is should it be used with invertebrates and live plants in the tank. The downside to the Kindle addition is no color which would have enhanced this lovely fish. It would have been helpful to have a resource list, but overall it is a good book and I recommend it.
After my son's betta died I thought I needed to know how to help him do better with his next one. This book answered my questions and even answered some that I didn't know to ask. Am I now an expert? No but I am more ready to try again. Not a hard book to understand like a lot I looked at. It's written so I can look up the answers to any new questions that will come up. If you're looking to keep a betta this is a great book to start with. Thanks
Very well written guide for beginners wanting to keep Betta Fish. I have been in the hobby for 30 years but still found several helpful tips . I wish I had read this before I got my first Betta and I could have avoided a few mistakes .
Lots of good information here, and a terrific friendly voice, but the text is arranged in chunks that are repeated and jumbled around (this is the kindle edition) and the result is the book is not linear and is just a little hard to follow. This would be a very helpful book if the editing for kindle had been a bit more careful.
This book does have some useful basic information,but it also has several factual flaws. Such as saying that bettas came from small puddles, or that they can be kept in bowls. If you want a great betta book i recommend the betta bible.
Very user friendly! Something that lacks in other books. I love the nonchalance! It makes it feel like a friend is teaching you without the annoying preachy my way or the highway you get from other books! The information is clear and i loved reading it!
Some things I knew, some I didn’t. Fast easy read, funny yet serious all in one. I highly recommend for anyone wanting to own a Betta fish.
