Awesome book, taught me the beggining steps of web development to a point where I feel very comfortable with front end topics. I emailed the author once for an error in the resources on his site and he fixed it within a few hours. I recommend this book.
The book is not meant for learning HTML 5. It is like a HTML 5 encyclopedia covering almost every HTML 5 tag that are being used till date. The book is better suited for seasoned web developers who are looking for some reference.
I've enjoyed this book. I've wanted to get back into these technologies. I'm only about 60% of the way through, but it's at just the right level for me. I've been doing HTML for nearly 20 years (really!) but management happened ;-) and I really didn't do much technically as HTML became much more complex and dynamic. While I'd coded in Javascript for small things, again, I didn't do the deep dive. I could spell CSS but that's it. I found this book to be very sensible in the level of detail, clarity of examples and general presentation. I'm up through the chapters on 3D graphics now, and am looking forward to finishing the book.
Before I bought this book, I had an understanding of HTML, CSS, Javascript, JQuery and Ajax, but didn't have a lot of practical experience. This book takes a chapter to discuss an API over each of ~25 chapters, far improved over the first edition of this book which had fewer chapters. Some of these APIs (Drag 'n Drop comes to mind off bat), can be accomplished more easily with JQuery, while the chapter in this book focused more on Javascript...something to keep in mind. Other chapters, like using HTML5 databasing or 2D or 3D canvasing were golden, even though I am currently using app engine for databases...it is good to know what options exist. For someone with no formal training, this book is a great eye-opener to web programming's possibilities.
Ignore any negative comments about this book, i thought it was so good i ended up ordering it in print version as well as my copy on kindle. It shows you by example step by step of how, why, and when. This book is great for the beginer as well as us old school html coders.
The book is well written - the examples from the website don't seem to want to work correctly in any browser I use.I use Firefox 21.0, Chrome, and IE 8 & 9I received a reply from the author about this so please read the comments - This started out as a 3 star review mostly out of frustration at not being able to get some of the examples to work.
Simply a great book....well written with great examples by a guy who is more focused on teaching rather than sounding smart. I have not come across an example that has not worked and it even has a basic JavaScript chapter to teach the basics of the language before it gets into all of the killer HTML5 API's which are in JavaScript. HTML5 is not your father's HTML....(I stole that from that old Oldsmobile add) And look at that cool cover!!!
The best HTML5 book I have read so far. Author's style of presentation is succinct and very palatable and it's full of good examples to try out.
