Mann's short introductions to various dualist Gnostic heresies are readable, even if they are all available in her book "the Trail of Gnosis." While this does contain a lot of interesting observations about the Mandaeans, some of the speculation of early British scholars putting them to the center of Christianity as stated as facts while Mann points out in other places Mann points out that the Mandaeans did not seem to have understood jewish doctrine entirely. Reading between the lines relationships remain opaque.
interesting overview with some information I can confirm from other sources. But clearly she is taking their version of things at face value. The wild confusion in their stories including dragging in an Egyptian disguised "god" should cue her something is wrong. And she even buys the idea of some halfwit "scholar" that John chapter one was borrowed from the Mandaeans. The very incoherence of Mandaean cosmology and writings compared with the coherence of John's Gospel should get you to suspect it is the Mandaeans who swiped from John, their agreement with some Talmud naysaying shows they have some such input in their origins, and then to say that St. John of Damascus was a Massalian is too much ignorance for my taste. St. John Damascene wrote extensively against heretics, was no Messalian and any similarity between heretical and orthodox documents is due to former borrowing from the latter, both coming from a common orthodox prior source the heretics warped it from and/or independent development along some shared lines like asceticismI used to dig this sort of crap when I was teenager. I am 64 years old and Eastern Orthodox for the past 7 years.
Another prime treatise from Judith Mann on gnostic history in medieval Asia Minor. A "must have" essential for followers of religious histories.
